Criss Oliva Warren DeMartini Aaand completely out of left field and something I will fight anyone for,,,, Paul Dean He had not only a great sound but a talent to put a feel to his timing and expression that a lot of better known names were more hit'n'miss doing. Kim Simmonds’ tone on the Savoy Brown album Blue Matter is a benchmark for heavy blues tone for me. Especially on side 2, which is live. Sounds like what it is…a 67 Gibson Flying V into a cranked up Marshall, with natural room ambiance. I’ve had the fortune of playing a few un-mic’d club gigs where I could really get the amp turned up, where we only had vocals (and maybe a kick drum) thru the PA. It’s so dynamic, especially when you’re playing blues.

Awesome! I love pretty much all of Ty Tabors tones from King’s X, solo albums, Platypus etc etc. I think his tones from the first King’s X albums are the most unique, Dogman is the heaviest, but I love the more raw sounds on Ear Candy and even Tape Head.

John Norum also gets a killer Strat tone on “Face It Live”. I think he was playing one of Gary Moore’s Strats at the time. And not to forget Michael Schenker… his tone on the Budokan live album is mouth watering, particularly how it blends with the other guitarist. Just fits so well.

Great choices on tones. It won't surprise you to find out that I agree with nearly all of them. Moving Pictures, Gretchen, Piece of Mind, Gutter Ballet, Corridors of Power, Physical Graffiti, Ghost in the Machine (or Zenyatta, can't decide), 5150, Black Clouds and Silver Linings (or Awake, again I can't decide) all have iconic guitar tones for me. I'll probably think of 20 more tomorrow.

The guitar sound on Power of the Night by Savatage really knocked me sideways. Popped the cassette into my car stereo, cranked the volume because there’s a long, quiet sound fx intro, when that riff kicked in with that sound, never heard anything like it. Ronni LeTekro has a great sound too, I guess I love the mids😍

Loved the answers. Criss Oliva - tragic that he passed so young, but damn, he wrote some amazing songs. Savatage blew me away from the first time heard them. Lifeson was hugely influential for me as well. Rush as a 3 piece was so full sounding and the levels of musicianship in all 3 were off the charts. Unfortunate that the concept album idea has gone away. Albums like 2112 with a whole story done in many songs was so big of an idea. Thanks for the great video.

Zeppelin I will always be my #1 guitar tone. All of Page’s tones are brilliant, but there’s something special about the tone on the first album. And it’s not just the Tele, Supro, Tone Bender and whatever else. It’s his mic techniques, and all the other studio wizardry. The man’s a nut, and I mean that in a good way. My other top guitar sounds are any Alex Lifeson tones up through Grace Under Pressure, EVH on the first four VH albums, Clapton’s “Beano” tone, Angus Young on the Let There Be Rock album (I believe he was using a 2203 instead of his usual non master volume Marshalls), and Jake E. Lee’s tone on the first Badlands album. I’m also fond of Ace Frehley’s tone on the Rock And Roll Over album (which sounds to me like he had either an EH LPB-1 or a Big Muff into a combination of Marshalls and old Fenders), and the tone Paul McCartney got on the “Paperback Writer” riff (which was his Epiphone Casino, most likely straight into a Vox UL730, using the built-in fuzz circuit).

From what I’ve read about him, he really puts an extraordinary amount of time and effort into getting his tones. I believe Geddy and Neil would get frustrated with him in the studio because he’d be messing around with his gear (mostly his effects) so much. I can just imagine him having some kind of paralysis over whether or not he should use his CE-1 on a particular part.
