My issue is when I get hypersensitivity from retinoids or other products my skin will tolerate almost nothing. Even barrier repair creams burn, sting and sometimes itch, plus gentle cleaners also sting. I find I just have to wait it out 4-5 days then it starts to settle down.

This winter I developed flaking from my .02% tretinoin that I'd not experienced in the previous six months. I kept using it daily, but used a much richer moisturizer as a buffer and got a richer moisturizing spf. It cleared up in a couple of months and, as the weather changed, I've not had problems going back to my previous routine of applying it to clean skin and moisturizing on top.

Like a lot of people, I tried Rx tret years ago without any guidance from the doctor and my experience was awful, I avoided retinol after that. Now with your guidance from your channel I'm using adapalene, slowly built up to nighty use, and I only had a little exfoliation around the sides of the nose/mouth. I am SO HAPPY with the way my skin looks, it has never been so smooth and glowy. Thanks so much for the education you provided!

Adapolene was making my skin insane! The dryness, the cracking, itching, burning etc...even my eyelids became irritated, dry, and slightly swollen (and I never put it anywhere near my eyes.) My mistake was using it daily right off the bat. What made a huge difference was switching to LA Roche Posay's hydrating (non foaming) gentle cleanser, using their Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer *before* my adapolene at night and letting it soak in a good 30 min. Then during the day and my off days I use La Roche Posays Ciciplast B5 Baume. That stuff has been a life saver. Plus, for being as thick as it is, it dries down surprisingly well. With this routine I've been able to use my adapolene every other day without the insane irritation. Still not ready to use it once a day, but maybe in a few more weeks. Also, my skin is looking just better in general with this routine.

Like clockwork on the third day I experienced extreme dryness/peeling/irritation and I am now backing off to restart the right way. I had to watch this video twice as I didn't understand why you were encouraging to stop the process, then I realized - it's NOT normal to continue with such a bad skin reaction! There is so much misinformation out there, if I hadn't seen this I honestly would have just continued using improperly and enduring the severe irritation. I have super sensitive, dehydrated, mature skin. I've done well with retinol, but I couldn't postpone using trentinoin any longer. I started over 2 months ago buffering and using it once very 5 days. By the fourth application, my skin was screaming at me! I had to stop for 12 days, repair my skin barrier, stripped down my routine, switched my beloved super hydrating moisturizer for the unelegant but highly effective Cerave, and lowered the frequency to once a week for 3 weeks. I then increased to once every 5 days, and I have added glycolic oat extract, and glycolic calendula excract which I bought from an old fashioned style chemist. This has helped immensely to prevent and diminish irritation. Now I'm up to twice a week. I feel so accomplished, ha! I keep telling myself your words: "This is a marathon, not a race ." Thank you for the reinforcement, and the explanation on how to proceed.

For some reason only that area got affected. I look like a creepy doll at the moment. LOL :D (Anabelle?) Luckily it's not that bad and I expect it to look better by tomorrow or the day after. My issue is my overly sensitive cheeks. They get red and sore from sunscreen or if I double cleanse, I’m scared to start my retinol and see what they do (I’m starting with an OTC cream to try the mildest option first)

Some things that really helped me were 1) only rinse my face in the AM, not wash. I was skeptical and thought that would be icky, but no, it is just fine. I still feel clean and refreshed. 2) Lowering my Vit C % in the AM, or skipping some days. 3) Definitely applying over moisturizer. and 4) if necessary cutting down to every other day, knowing I will still get the benefits. From this video, I will try diluting a bit. It is kind of hard to go from pea size to half a pea and still be able to spread it on my not so large face. Mixing with some moisturizer sounds good.

I’m giving my skin a break from brightly and nightly at the moment as it suddenly became very dry with the warmer weather and wearing a mask at work all day but when I restart I will defo give this tip a go - I felt I needed to par back a bit and simplify the routine for a while and just up the moisturiser at night which seems to be helping calm things down.

Is it normal to get the retinol uglies past the first 6 weeks? I haven't had problems with acne in years and my first 6-8 weeks on retinol were amazing. For some reason, in the third month, I got acne all over my left cheek in a way I never have before, followed by dry scabbing and peeling. It's been "healing" but still have for the last two weeks or so. Not sure what I did wrong, but I literally feel like a scabby snake lol.

Is it normal to NOT get severe uglies from retinoid? Other than some serious peeling and dryness and a few breakouts here and there, I didn't experience a LOT of the purging that I was terrified of. I've been using it for two months now. I use it on top of Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid, every alternate night, topped off finally with Aveeno colloidal oatmeal moisturizer. Nothing big in the AM except 10% niacinamide and moisturizer, and 2% salicylic acid every three days.

Hello doc, how are you?i hope so you are doing well. wanted to share with you something...that is 3 years before I had consulted one dermatologist due to my acne breakouts and probably it was because of my pcod. however she prescribed me one cleanser and acretin(0.5%)/tretionoin cream. back then i had no idea about retinol/tretinoin and uses of it. also she didnt guide me about it. and maybe i overapplied it around my mouth area and after 2 weeks of uses I have witnessed with peeling off, more acnes, and discoloration on my chin...and immediately I'have stopped using that. its been 3 years still I have the black discoloring under my lips which makes me insecure. now i am careful about my skincare. but whenever i use niacinamide or hylauronic acid on that affected area it becomes more dark.what to do?

Is it also valid for the acne purge produced by retinols? I didn’t have acne, and after using retinol I started having crazy break outs. I’ve stopped retinol, it’s getting better but not completely. Some say this is a part of the process and I should use retinol again. Other day it’s not for me ( it has been 8-9 weeks since I started and stopped) thanks

I just started a retinol. Only used it for 2 nights. I've stopped now. The first morning it looked glowing and it started to lightly peel. Now I'm on day 3 and have stopped using the retinol because my skin feels tight and sore. I'm concerned the tightness will last? It's sore to smile or brush my teeth. The appearance is not looking so great now either. It's tight and red. Is this normal?

Hi Dr Sam, I have used 1% retinol around my eyes after a couple of days of using on my face and didn’t had any irritation. Now the skin around my eyes is red, dry, a bit a peeling is happening and it looks very wrinkled (like at a very old person but I’m 33 and my skin was great wrinkled free before). I have stoop using it, it has been 5 days and no real change. Will it recover if I repair the skin barrier or the wrinkles will stay? Thank you again for this video and advice.

It is best to allow your skin to heal before trying to introduce the eye product with retinol again. Try using it on alternate days and you can use moisturiser to buffer your skin before application. ❤

I've been using tretinion 0.025% for a year, the most frequent I've done is every other day. With all the tips from derms I've not had irritation, but should I advanture to everyday use or that's a risk not necessary? Please advise, anyone with similar experience ?

Diluting into moisturizer was the key that allowed me to get my skin used to tretinoin. These days I find I can 0.025 % undiluted, but it took me over a year to get here 😅 Update (Aug 2021): my skin stopped tolerating 0.025 % undiluted, so I'm back to using tret with "mixers", as I like to call them 😁

There are alot of Derms who say some people just cannot and should not ever use retinoids.
@traepalmer
3 жыл бұрын
@@fallguy6196 yeah, there's a category out there that simply cannot use them at all. I'm in the category that can use them but only at very moderate amounts. By contrast, some people have very resistant skin and can use the strongest retinoids (e.g., tret 0.1 %, taz 0.05 and 0.1 %) with no problem. It's a very individualized thing.

I been using tret for years. I am still using the dilution technique, not planning to change the method. My derm said, why fix if its not broken. But i did increase the potency from 0.025 to 0.05 few years back…
@traepalmer
2 жыл бұрын
@@stellaazmi my thoughts exactly - if it's working for you, why not continue? These days I'm actually applying undiluted but have reduced the frequency to every third night: I find that reduces the side effects of redness and persistent soreness better on me than dilution with higher frequency. The key for everyone, though, is to experiment and find what works for their skin and what's sustainable over the long term.

Tbh because I break out super rarely I was like “I’m not gonna have the purging everyone talks about”. I still started at .025 at 3x weekly over a moisturizer, despite my false confidence, and I can’t stress how wrong I was in thinking I was immune from the purging phase. I have been reading endless Reddit threads and videos and it’s been keeping me from quitting because EVERYONE seems to experience it. I was humbled lmao, but I’m only 2.5 weeks in! No irritation, no dryness, just getting the deep gunk out and it’s still overwhelming without those aspects 🥲 Anyone reading this, keep going 💕💕💕

Rx retinoids should come with instructions. The first time I use it it was a nightmare. Now I introducing it again very very very slowly. Every 4 days with moisturizer (ALAWAYS) for 1.5 month. Then I'll switch to every 3 days for 1.5 month. If at any moment irritation or purge start I'll back up again. The days that I don't use tretinoin I use CwraVe Retinol I just love all the ingredients and is not as irritating and always follow with moisturizer. I hope this could help someone.
