This is amazing. The layout has enough action in a smaller space and yet it simplifies the process. I just think of all of the years I spent as a kid with a basic layout (no scenery) wanting to have something bigger, better. Worked my way up into teen year with a 4x8 presswood board slowly building a Boy's Life magazine layout and Dad teaching me to build houses from scrap wood and getting me wire for the switches. The problem was the process took so long that I kept getting bored and would keep changing the layout before most of the buildings, scenery, roads, painting, was added. Years later while in college I picked it up again, only to be too busy and still never fully completed it. To those who doubt- it will be a project, but just follow the instructions - you can learn how to do it!

I had to stop your video a minute in and have a lie down! You see I am a 'potentially new' railroad modeller (I haven't even bought my first length of track yet) and the thing that scares me most - and I can't be the only one - is the ELECTRICS!!! 😬 ...I was literally terrified when I saw the wiring under your layout!!! I have never dealt with electric before - the most I have done is put in a bulb and maybe a fuse - so even before I make my first basic beginners loop I am already getting very nervous about what may lay ahead of me when I want to run more than one train! What are all those wires, what are all those boxes, what do they do, how did you make them....Arrrggggg! ;) .....I will have to go and make a cup of tea! :)

Hi Stephen! First off, thanks for watching my video and taking time to comment. I’m sorry about the mess of wires that you saw, but they really aren’t anything to worry about. Those are Woodland Scenics Just Plug Light Hubs. They are for the lighting in all the buildings on the layout. Some buildings have more than one light in them, and each require a plug to bring them power. It’s really a nice plug and play system, eliminating the need for soldering and all of that stuff. I rewatched the video and tried to imagine it from your perspective and yes, seeing all those wires made it quite daunting. I can assure you when it comes down to the very basics of running a train on a track, it really is only two wires, one for each rail connected to the controller. All that other stuff is just fluff. Ha ha I hope you go forward and get into the hobby, it really is a lot of fun. Thanks again for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. Feel free to ask any questions that might come up if you decide to move forward.

Look at it as a fun education, low-voltage is a lot of fun once you learn the basics, and it’s very basic. Don’t look at it as failure look at it as a learning lesson, I guarantee you you’ll have a lot of fun once you start. Especially the first time you set the locomotive on the rails and move it forward and backwards, this hobby is awesome there’s so many different levels and directions you can take it. Hi Dan, Texan living in Australia, getting into the hobby. Used this video to go and purchase the kit. I have the bachmann echo valley train. Iam planning an old Western town layout. Question , would I still use the supplied pavement and just glue gravel on top for gravel roads, or just do gravel straight on the risers? Thanks for the video, helped a lot. David
@DansGrandValley

Hi David! Great question! I wouldn’t bother pouring the smooth-it plaster for roads just to cover them with gravel. After you have the plaster cloth done, you can just lay out your roads and cover them with the gravel. I did that on my gravel road that goes up to the very top, where the house and the shop are. I didn’t bother to pour a road there. congratulations on your purchase, I hope you have as much fun and enjoyment with it as I had. It is a fun kit to build. I hope you share your western town when you get it done, I’d love to see it! Thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it.

I love this model RxR and how you modified parts of it. I'm trying to decide on a track plan for a model rr that I will build in my new home after a move to another state. Toying with the idea of using a track plan from an issue of MR from 1996 and including the 2 x 9 foot shelf layout of Pelle Soeburg from MR Oct & Nov 2002. It would be awesome to use a combination of the Grand Valley and River Pass to make this C-shaped model RR.

Great video Dan. The only thing I don't like about these Woodland Scenics layout kits is that the design is about 20 years behind the times. Running in a circle and switching two industries just isn't how modern layouts are designed. It would be a nice to see a new layout kit built around a track plan with an emphasis on shortline operations. A better way to go about designing layout kits is, in my opinion at least, going with TOMA (The One Module Approach). Start with a basic set-up on 2-4 sections that can easily be built, but then sell expansion kits where the layout can be added onto in the future. That's something I wish Woodland Scenics would consider but their Mod-U-Rail system seems to be the closest thing they have to that concept.
@DansGrandValley
Жыл бұрын
Well, you never know if woodland scenics might just decide to go that way? I like that idea of TOMA! With what I know now versus what I knew when I started, I would probably go that way if they had them available. Thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment, I really appreciate it!

My guess is that a layout kit like this is a very good starting point. You get to practice most of the modeling skills needed, the track layout features a bit of everything and it will help you find out what you like and don't like when it comes to railway modeling. I think it's much better to start with a kit, and grow from there, than to spend cash and fin out you're not happy with the end result. Or worse, you're overwhelmed by the task you laid out for yourself.

Interesting video and ideas. I've got a question about your NCE Power Cab setup. Why are you using the phone like cable to connect the controller? Is that part of a more complex setup than what is normally done with the Power Cab? I would rather use that cable than the flat one mentioned in the instructions.
@DansGrandValley
Жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, the answer is yes. A few weeks ago I added an NCE SB5 Smart Booster to my setup. Not only does the SB5 provide 5 amps of power to the layout, but it is also a complete stand alone command station, like the Power Cab. So that frees up the power cab to now be a walk around throttle, so It only needs the small coiled cable to connect to the panel. The big flat wire goes between the panel and the SB5 now. And I’m free to add more panels around the layout as I want to. Here is the video I made a few weeks ago about installing the SB5. kzitem.info/news/bejne/qINo3pqerXScjX4 Thank you for watching.

I figured out my expansion before I started by using AnyRail 6 track planning software. I mapped out the track plan that comes with GVRR to the software and used that as my base. Then I just kept trying different configurations of track until I came up with my Grand Valley Plus. Keep plugging along, as I love to follow. It would be great as an expansion like that. You can basically modify it anyway you’d like. A lot of the basic components are for sale separately, like the risers and foam sheeting. I’m thinking of doing a new video where I list what you actually get in the kit, and what you still have to buy separately. Thanks for watching and commenting Aaron. 👍🏼

Wow, I never thought of that but it certainly could be. You’d have to widen the roadbeds by doubling up on the risers , and you’d have to either open up the mountain so you weren’t running inside tunnels, or make them lower and run above. Certainly a lot to think about, but being all foam and plaster cloth, I think that you could design it that way for sure. Awesome concept, if you do it PLEASE keep me posted, I’d love to see it. It's a great way to start into the hobby. The problem is it's only 4x8. I'm running 85′ passenger cars and need tracks with a 22 curve, my test track is already 8x8. Either I can buy 2 kits and make the layout into 8x16? or buy 1 kit and try to extend the width by an extra 4ft. I got into the hobby because I take the train everywhere now...tired of flight delays so I have a better attachment to passenger cars then freight cars. Freight cars you can run on an 18 curve, passenger cars you can't.

Yes, I was naïve at first when I got this layout. I didn’t know that my old Athearn blue box passenger cars wouldn’t run on it. I am considering expanding at some point, and running a two line main around the outside with crossovers, and switches for locals to come into town. I had to stick with 4 x 8 given the real estate that I could occupy in the basement. But I think I can keep expanding a little bit slowly over time.

Very cool! I considered that one, when I was deciding whether to go N scale or HO. I decided to go with the HO scale, simply because I had a lot of rolling stock, and Locos left over from my childhood. I like the way the scenic Ridge is laid out!

Excellent Choice . Q : Is Rivet Counter better then Athearn Genisis ?🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃 . How much is your layout worth in total ?

I’m pretty sure Rivet Counter is more highly detailed than AG, but as far as overall quality, I’m not sure which one’s better. As far as total value, it would be hard to assign a value to my layout, given the time I spent on it, and other items that I’ve added over the years. Thanks very much for watching.
