Good job mate, might be worth checking them every once in a while. I spent some time working at a Porsche garage years ago and the clearances on these were done as part of the annual service. They would often come in sounding like crap and leave sounding sweet as a nut.

Just a random point on the being nervous about messing stuff up - I find it’s often useful to have basic checklists for things you might have to repeat semi frequently(that you physically tick off) then you know you’ve done everything and there’s nothing to worry about!

I'm so glad that its sounding better, Jeff!! If it were me, I might consider going in and removing the rocker on the valve that was way out of spec and make sure that the cam or rocker wear surface isn't going away. Its easy insurance that you aren't overlooking something insidious that could get worse. Even the modern oils with the most zinc these days can't always provide the right lubrication. Good luck!

Some people are suggesting that on the 911 you should do the clearances twice a year! My experience of taking mine in rallies is also that it all needs doing after every rally if you have been driving the car hard. Whilst the covers are off I suggest checking the cylinder head stud torques after a rebuild as well. Good luck with it.

I finished my 3.2 rebuild in November '22 and did my 1000 mile valve check last month. So far so good. The valve noise should be part of the wonderful symphony and not a solo act, lol. Anyway I do the wiggle test on each of them and can feel for the clearance, then re-do all 12. Once they are re-clearanced, I give them another wiggle to feel what a verified .1mm feels like again. This last time I used a mixture of feeler gauges and the gadget that turns the adjuster screw 10% of a full turn or 36 degrees on the 1.0mm per turn thread pitch. To me that they way I use the feeler gauge may be a bit looser than the thread pitch method, which takes feel out of the equation. But at any rate, I'm about to take a road trip and will take tools to do this just in case mine come loose. Great videos BTW and I've enjoyed them very much.

Would one of those car stethoscopes be a worthy investment to diagnose such issues? I don't know what you can hear from them, but the closer you are to the rattle the louder it'd be, I'd think. Making a remote one you could mount anywhere to record rattles and knocks on a drive could be handy too, but that's probably invented at huge cost I imagine. Great video as always, thanks Jeff!

I don’t know about the pork engines but generally the clearance on the exhaust valve is supposed to be a bit more than intake as they get a bit hotter thus expand more. You really don’t want valves hanging open when hot as it can lead to burnt out valves and seats and even predetonation and backfire. A loose ticking valve tappet can also indicate a bent or stuck valve so a compression test is usually a good idea to rule out issues.

Surprised to hear that loosening of the adjusters is a common Porsche thing. Increased clearance more commonly comes from mechanical deformation - cam lobe wear, rocker pad wear, adjuster tip wear, rocker shaft wear, bent pushrod or deformation of thread of either rocker or adjuster. Or the valve can be held open thru being bent or valve face/seat damage. You described it as being very loose ... you sure there were no other factors in play? Guess time will tell. Really enjoy the Alfa stuff and seeing you battle the challenges that make us all curse. The Porsche thing doesn't do it for me but I sure respect your passion for them. Thanks for the entertainment.
