I think perhaps the biggest tragedy that isn't talked about with WoW being in such a sorry state is the disbanding of guilds. Above all, I think, games should be fun. Part of the equation for a fun game is the game itself, but the other part (especially in an MMORPG) is having friends to play it with. If your friends leave the game it's difficult to find the game fun. Guild disbands have sort of a ripple effect through the game. It effects not only those who were discontent with the game in the guild, but those who weren't. So instead of losing like maybe 10 players, the game loses 20-30 players. Which in turn leaves the community with less players, which then demotivates them from playing (because who wants to play a dead game?) and it just ripples throughout the entire community. The bottom line is this: If you're not having fun with a game then you shouldn't play it. There were even some questions for my casual-heroic guild as to whether or not we would even raid this tier. Most nights we have had the bare minimum we needed for a raid. I suspect that once we down H Sylvanas we won't have a raid. Who knows what it will look like next tier for us. I am still hopeful that in the long term the team can correct the many design flaws that currently exist in WoW and bring players back. In the short term however I am pretty pessimistic as to the future of the game.

All the guilds I've known have disbanded or are otherwise on a hiatus. All of them have just shed too many players around the edges, losing one or two players and not being able to replace them can kill a roster, and suddenly twenty people stop playing. I actually don't know where I'd go if i was to rejoin - I can't imagine how bad it must be on low pop servers.

my guild is in the same boat - firstly WAAAAY behind where we usually are, every previous tier we would have finished Heroic by now and moved on to the first few bosses in Mythic but now we barely have enough (10 to 12 players) people who log in for raids. I have a feeling that once (or even IF) we down H-Sylv, the guild will either disband or go into permanent casual mode because i dont see many of the people who left ever coming back or at least not any time soon.

I am a GM of a 10+ year guild that NEVER disbanded, we kept everyone on the boat for years. BfA made practically everyone quit. When we saw Shadowlands, we were really happy and had everyone coming back, even "classic" players that wanted to try retail with us. Once we beated Denathrius, we were waiting for something to happen. And 9.1 was a joke. We used to farm gold (Auction House, mainly) before WoW tokens, because it was fun. Nowadays markets does not have sense anymore since you can bring in money from outside the World of Warcraft (with botting and WoW tokens). Pay to win makes me want to quit, I have no time for this. We used to PvP, that is way too hard now because of the gearing grind. Most people in our guild did not want to get "two shots" by people that have farm'd gear and set up a nice "swifty" macro. Arena was a joke because of the boosters. We played the best we could and still could not go Glad because of boosting community cluttering the 2100+ bracket. Every match we faced a multi-glad fully geared, winning 5 points for each victory, losing 15 points for each defeat. The grind was too much : it's a game, I am not running for 3400 arena rating. Oh, and I did not talk about class imbalance and broken conduits that made you choose between pve or pvp (or to reroll the SAME CLASS to play both PvE and PvP optimally). We used to reroll and level up together, doing old content and old dungeons. But do you see the chores you have to do just to have fun (in PvE, PvP) ? We used to RP with people in Azeroth, but nowadays, everyone is AFK in Oribos waiting for the next (boosted) M+ train. People with insane rating doing no damage and dying on every single pack ... boosted. I was fed up with all the chores and the story not progressing, not having the sensation to explore a mysterious world and discover things but to "work" for some 5D Chess shenanigans. I enjoyed to log in to play the game, they destroyed it with the Blizzard Store, the WoW Token, the "permissive answers" to botting (aka "none"), the boosting, the ability to "hop" servers ... What is the point to incarn a character that have no meaning IN THE WORLD ? Everyone is the super-savior of the universe, we are refered to as "commander", "greatest one", "gigaboss of da universe" but we still have to collect demon poo to help random strangers. Blizzard has no clue how to drive a story anymore. I don't need to be a super-giga-superhero. I just want to be my character, more powerful than a soldier, yes, and fun to play BUT a character that needs his friends to succeed in this insanely dangerous world. I need to see "normal" people living their lives in VILLAGES, wandering and trading on the roads, I need to understand why I need to fight for (hint : not for loot or mounts), to quote Chen. Blizzard listened to the wrong "customers" and analyzed their numbers the wrong way : players did not want this shit, most of them quit now and will "never" come back. Players now know that Blizzard won't listen and change the game. So I quit too and I am playing FFXIV : not the best gameplay but great story, great community, great things to do (housing, emotes, transmog) AND GREAT DEVS. We are now a Discord community, friends playing different types of games, but not WoW anymore. Sorry for this wall of text :D !

To me, honestly, it's the same game but better in a lot of ways, I wish I could enjoy FFXIV gameplay the same I do in WoW. It is not as fluent with the character and it's animations, responsiveness and hitboxes that register a hit long time before the animation strikes you feel really bad. Wow spoiled me a LOT being so reliable on those fields, also having some really original and creative mechanical designs that I feel a lot more risky and hardcore than the majority of FF ones. The problem and how to solve it is really easy on the surface, adressing how much homework we have to make it and do not force players to progress for long hours in a boring content that's nowhere near the majority of end-game player goals. Trust issues though, are much harder to adress, specially company-wise more than inside wow. I really think there is a significant probability that 9.1.5 is the definition of the new game director getting into wow to fix everything and hear the community (I think he passed by to some popular ex-wow streamers channels to say hello even though they were not playing wow) and I think he deserves, at the very least, the benefit of the doubt, so I will definetly be checking in at least for half-end 9.1.5 and the start of 9.2.

I feel that. I've been a fan of the Warcraft universe since Warcraft 2, when I was in middle school. It's really hard to let go of that amount of fixation over that amount of time. For a long time I justified it with, "I will watch it die firsthand, like an estranged family member." But lately the bad decisions are so rapid fire, the core game so far removed from the original setting, that I find myself taking breaks more and more, like I can't keep doing this. At this point Blizzard has gone from ignoring my investment as a fan to actively criticizing it, and quitting the game is getting a little easier and lasting a little longer each time.

That'll be written on your tombstone. So long as people like y'all keep paying Blizzard, they have no incentive to take a real look at what they're doing wrong. Also, looking into it a bit, it seems most of the good devs of WoW are long gone, and it's living off its name at the moment, because the people currently employed that run things aren't there to make a good game, they're there to make money. As a former long time WoW player and top US high-end raider, I suggest you take a good look at yourself and ask if you're having fun, or if you're afraid of change and learning something new again. Join us in FFXIV, it'll likely end up like WoW someday because of the nature of corporate interest, but not for a long time. FFXIV is just hitting it's stride.

Also you can enjoy fast BG queues if you like it (I do) :) I have no problem finding groups for +20s in Alliance and I'm progressing mythic raid now with my guild. Of course it's better on Horde side but Alliance is totally playable

We have a 2-day raiding guild that raids 3h/day on weekends. Right now we're progging on Sylvanas and will be sure to reclear at least once so everyone in the team gets the kill. Honestly beyond that, we barely even play. There's a mythic+ team running but other than raiding there's just not a lot to do in the game but if you ask me, I think that's perfectly fine too, so long as it changes (to better) in the near future.

I have been playing WoW since 2008. I stuck around in Shadowlands due to my guild being super fun and chill, but after a point, even that wasnt enough to justify paying 15$ a month when I could have fun for free on discord. I picked up FF14 since I have played most of the other FF games and I have been loving it. I convinced a few friends to come in. The free trial certainly helped and now they are hooked too. My plans for WoW currently is to log on during the last part of the last expansion, do LFR and see if the game is still fun.

Idk if you remember but i am that guy who was probably the only venthyr boomie in your chat in season 1. I always loved putting all spells and trinkets in one macro and just pop everything at once especially when they all share the same cd, till this day i still call it swifty for the great memories and memes that were made of the swifty oneshot macro. I made a troll venthyr druid as an alt character just to have fun as everything has a 3 min cd, frenzy, CA, troll racial and quantum. What was originally created as a for fun character turned out to become my main character in season 2 for pushing M+. I had no prior experience with balance druid whatsoever. I am currently having 2602 rio score and i don't plan to stop there. I played every single week since the beginning of the season and managed to get some score every week.I am really happy about the split score system where you gotta play both tyrannical and fortified keys. I have a full time job which doesn't allow me to play a lot so being able to login during the evening and play some keys and go to bed afterwards is more than enough for me. I am motivated to play and i don't plan on stopping, a big problem not just in WoW but many other places is that people like to jump on trains, whether it's a hype train or people going away from something it's a bad trend to follow. All these recent things that have been happening with WoW doesn't really affect me, all i really need is 4 friends to play M+ with and enjoy their company. I couldn't care less if there is 10 million subs or 2 million subs. Also people focus on the wrong thing and talk about what's popular, again i couldn't care less if they removed a picture that was hanging on a wall inside an inn because it was showing a little bit more cleavage and now they replaced it with flowers.

I'm a boomkin main (was also in WoTLK) and I gave 9.1 an honest go to try and push for keys despite what everyone was saying about the state of boomkins from PTR before 9.1 was released. I went venthyr, switched back between NF and both... venthyr boomkin is basically considered the current covenant to go-to for PVE content for both keys and raids.... I'm basically doing M+ keys only, venthyr ranged dps has been very difficult to come by when pugging... and it's like why take a boomkin when you can just take the venthyr frost mage too because they can lust? My best timed keys are SD and HOA only for this reason. I was very frustrated with my overall DPS in keys not doing well and extremely dependent on tank pulls and cd's.... to the point that I rerolled to an entirely different DPS class (BM hunter) and now I really enjoy the game again as I did in S1 for keys. At the time of this writing I was 2292 in S1 and now 2335 in S2 on my boomkin..

In advance, please forgive the length. I feel it is important you all can grasp what WoW once meant to me. I began my WoW experience very shortly after the release of the Burning Crusade. My top 3 toons we a NE Rogue an BE rogue and a NE warlock (all female). I left WoW a few months after the Pandaria expansion. I was an avid PvX player, who largely concentrated on the PvE part of the game, yet occasionally got into the PvP aspect. How good was I? In PvE, I knew A LOT of tricks and time saving techniques, perhaps moreso than most, as I loved exploring and taking my time to uncover such things. However, I'd humbly say that my gameplay skill was average. To noobs I was a goddess. To truly skilled players, I was little more than a noob. In PvP however - even though it was not my favorite aspect of the game - I was good at it. In fact, for the last 4 years of my time with WoW, I was commonly ranked in the top 100 PvP players in the game. In the last few months, I actually broke into the top 10. To this day, I still love to ask, "In WoW, what is the most common thing said in PvP group chat?" Answer: "Will someone please kill that F***ing Rogue!" To be honest, I loved (past tense) the game. I had a lot of fun and made some great friendships. I was even the guild leader of a Horde guild so large we have to form 3 separate factions of the guild (Blood Fury). I found a few really good recruiters and was lucky enough to have chief officers who knew what they were doing. We even set up an annual raid of all alliance cities, with 8 - 25 main raid groups, which would freeze and even crash the games of most alliance players who tried to stop us! Think about it... You're a Draenei Warrior just chilling out in Stormwind. You happen to notice the chat window. Someone said, "A butt-load of Horde just overran IronForge and are headed to Stormwind." You quickly get on your alliance chat and call everyone you know to your location. In 5 minutes you put together a group of 30 - 40 people. Yet fully unaware and unprepared for what was about to happen next. Moments later, you see a handful of horde raiders headed your way. "It's only a dozen of them... We got this," you think, and run out to slaughter them. Within the next few moments you find yourself running for your life as you notice nearly 200 horde players descending upon you. To add to the further chaos, what happens to your game, with so many people in the same area at the same time> If your graphics card is either too weak or your graphics setting are not set to absolute minimum settings, your fellow alliance members begin to freeze up or disappear from the game. I was also the leader of an Alliance guild on a different server (Celtic Warriors of Tyria) ... but that one didn't get too big, it was more of a social thing ... as I was also a Horde spy! The beginning of the end came... I remember spending months and months, grinding away to get the best possible gear in the game for all of my top characters. It should also be noted that I am an altoholoic and had at least one of every class in the game and a stable full of BEs. So, getting top level gear for my top 3 toons was a bit of a grind. The the release of Cataclysm came out .. THOSE MOTHERF***ERS! It took me 6-8 months to get the best possible gear, 3 days later, "Oh, run these new quests, you can get better green gear than your mix of purple and orange in about 2 hours or less!" Okay, I was pissed ... but I dealt with it and moved on. Then came Pandaria. My first thought was, "Kung Fu Panda meets Pokemon and it's children's week all year long. Admittedly, I was wrong about the pets... I LOVED the pets! The Panda was definitely cooler than I originally thought and I did like the idea that I could choose my faction. But that's where the fun ended. I PAY to play a game. I PAY to select a realm that I desire to play. I PAY to have toons in a low pop realm, as those toons are farmers and I have zero desire to compete with 40 other people for 3 nodes of iron ore! Having educated myself on the benefits of certain realms and evils of others, I PAY to select the realms of my choosing. Welcome to CRZ ... cross realm zoning ... you like low pop? you like to avoid a-holes? you like farming? you like being able to get the first hit on a boss you've been battling to reach for the last 45 minutes? You PAID REAL MONEY to join a realm that makes all this possible? You continue to pay every month, while top games such as Guild Wars, ESO, GTA and other games that outsell WoW charge no such fees? Well... Blizzard says, "F*** you. We don't care. Would you like to keep paying your subscription fee ever 6 months or would you like to switch to either a monthly or annual plan? Sure, all of the other games have micro transactions. Some are even PtW

I honestly think BFA dungeons were the pinnacle of M+ design even with all fhe annoying bugs. They were especially good in 8.3 with awakened. SL dungeons feel sooo lackluster in comparison design and mechanics wise. Like we went from BFA where we had high character customization in 8.2 and 8.3 with azerite/essences/corruptions (I would literally try different corruption/essence loadouts weekly depending on the affixes or dungeon) to SL where we couldn't even swap our conduits often let alone our covenants. Also I'm a casual KSM the new KSM reqs are dogshit especially with these dungeons in SL. I just wanna have fun dungeons and fun systems to play around with where I am free to play all 3 specs of my class and maybe roll an alt like I did in 8.3 unhindered by blizzard. I rolled a bear druid in 8.3 just to stack full twilight dev/vers/staff from 2nd boss in nyalotha and crush keys and it was a blast seeing TD go off and delete packs and bosses.

If you’re looking for that raiding experience without the unnecessary retention mechanics that force you to spend all your extra time doing chores in the game it might be worth a shot to boost a character (if you don’t care about the story, if you do care about the story do the MSQ because it’s amazing) and see if FF raiding is for you or not. I love it when I see hardcore players of certain games still being loyal & hoping their beloved game(s) to be better even they have been moving on to other game at the moment. I’ve been a hardcore builder in The Sims for 21 years and just recently moved over to FFXIV because the state of the game is just WoW; the content is not improving, the company behind it keeps on milking their player base while releasing crappy expansions & not fixing ongoing bugs for years. I know that I can’t compare a life simulation game with an MMO, but I’ve found my happiness here. But, I will never quit the game because I’ve been playing it since I was in primary school and until now, I still hope that the game will be improved & gained the desired quality that we’ve been requesting all these while. The most important point is to love yourself; in other words - prioritise your mental health. Since you’re raiding in FFXIV now, maybe you can try to play the Main Scenario Quests of the game just to test the water, or try other games with different kind of gameplay or genre just to make you occupied. I wish you the best and congratulations on clearing the entire Savage Raids in Shadowbringers!

I think a big problem they have bringing people back to the game is the amount of outside preparation required to be able to mythic raid/high end M+, at least they are making it a little better in 9.1.5. I'd love to see you world first raid again though, it's still a huge spectacle would be great for the teams and your channel for you to be a part of it!

100% agree im quitting for now, definately willing to try 9.2 again, but if there is another farming prep system like korthia/maw/thorgast im off that sh*t. I mean why the fk do i have to spend 4+ hors a day beeing FORCED into a useless content that i dont even wanna do but that is necessary to do raid

Honestly for me and wow, we've been an on and off relationship for years and i feel like this is just one of those times. I always find myself coming back to the game eventually. Sometimes having time away from something you love reignites the passion. Right now is a great time for WoW to look at the franchise while peoples attention are on other things and really listen to the community. "To keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results is the definition of insanity." WoW needs change.

I play fairly casually, but I play a whole ton of alts, so it doesn't really get boring. If I don't feel like pushing keys on my druid, I can hop onto literally any other class and see if anyone in my guild wants to tackle some lower keys.

Idk why I’m seeing this, but you basically said how I feel about the game too. I’m basically catching up on single player games now that my sub is over. I don’t think I’ll come back this expansion I’m over shadowlands. P.S i hit the sub button cause your content seems interesting to watch :)

I'm just messing around with alt specs/classes. I was having a blast with M+, but the next few weeks are horrible affixes and some folks are taking a break, so I'm just taking the opportunity to try new things and pick up some new skills. Also improving UI/macros/setup, just trying to get better in the downtime. And some mount farming :)

I'm a very casual player - not at a high level like you or others and I don't raid. I use to raid and enjoyed it but just don't have the time nor the desire to commit to it. I took about a 3 month hiatus from the game after 9.1. But I've started playing again and I'm actually enjoying leveling up alts. How long this will last - I don't know. I am looking forward to 9.1.5, but expect a fairly lengthy wait until 9.2 so i expect that I will probably take another hiatus in a little while. I started playing WoW back in 2005 (just a few months after launch) and remember "the good old days". I have a hard time saying goodbye, but if the game continues to lag as it has and underwhelm, I'm not sure how long I will stick with.

I totally relate to this, I had the same issue with Everquest. Guild/core group breakups are hard, its usual for people to take some time to reassess even playing the game or take some time out, its like a relationship.

I have played WoW since WOTLK Patch 3.3.0 and I have played mostly non-stop up until 2017 when I started to take 1-2 month breaks, then I took about 4 ish months off in BFA around 8.2 until fully quitting in May 2021. I Played FFXIV for a few months but for some reason it was just hard to get into it. But pretty much now what's filling my time is singleplayer games and old console games. Might possibly give ESO another shot, which will probably last a month or two. I just hope WoW can get better in the future, I feel like its my home in a way because of all the time I put into my characters and the mount/toy collection I've farmed up. I miss my collections.

Tu was dir Spaß macht, dein Content ist super, egal was du machst.

I'm going to disagree with your view on dungeons. One of the best dungeons ever made was BRD and to do the whole thing it could easily take you over two hours. That shit was fun. It actually made you communicate with people in the party because you were stuck with each other for a long period of time. No one communicates in dungeons anymore because you don't need to. You're in and out in less than half an hour. Also, so many people loved Mechagon. Mega dungeons are a throw back to ones like BRD, which was such a great design. Dungeons shouldn't be designed to be done as fast as possible. I know that's not the case for M+, but you can still try and do longer, more difficult dungeons within a time frame and have M+ work. Dungeons should be a break from the open world, an extension of the story, and an experience that rewards your time invested accordingly. I'm not saying make all dungeons take 2 hours, but the mindset of "get in get out asap" is legit why the dungeons and the content we have nowadays, feels empty and unfulfilling. People just want to speed through everything and get all their gear asap. I've loved wow for a very long time, but between the 4 layer dip of RNG and the focus on engagement and not enjoyment, the game has never felt so unfulfilling and joyless.

I am currently working on obtaining my very first CE I am in a 8/10M Guild and we are working hard to get it. Overall I am motivated to play wow because of that it is what is driving me for 9.1.5 I will play to finish that goal + legion M+ and then as for 9.2 hopefully obtaining my second CE. that is what is making want to log into the game that I have played since I was 8 years old now 21.

I still think it's a good choice to keep your possibilities open. Even YoshiP the FF14 producer is saying that for games in general. It's okay to play multiple games, to alternate, as long as you are having fun. If Blizzard realizes their mistakes and decide to so some serious changes in the future regarding their retention mechanics and the other problems, why not? But questions to WoW veterans, I never played modern WoW (only a bit during the first years), is it normal that during a raid all the mechanics are explained on screen via icons and timers? I have the impression that it's like playing a giant QTE. Where is the fun in that? (Legitimate question)

Do what you think is fun at the moment. It's what being a gamer is all about. I've been juggling through WoW, FFXIV, New World, D2R to enjoy.

I quit during the great migration of 2021 to FFXIV. For me, I don't think I'll be going back for the patch either, since it's all QOL stuff, and no content. Farming the Sha for the mount was my peak weekly task two weeks after 9.1 was out, and I did everything new, before it turned into a slog. With the lack of anima for the collector, I couldn't even get the stuff I wanted to play with. After 9.1.5 is out, then what? The Legion content I already did before (back when I found WoW and started playing). Now that I've experienced a game with evergreen content, I don't think I will go back. I will play what is fun for me, no more bending to force myself to deal with bad unfun game design.

We are demotivated as well. With high hopes that next patch will keep the guild running again. While waiting for that, most of us are playing new world, ff, and other mmorpg games.. some of us playing alts or preparing new toon for raiding on next patch. We still catchup with the weekly quest/korthia fate/world boss.. obviously no more daily commitments.
