Mya-Rose Craig delivered this special video message to open our Emerging Talent Breakthroughs: Getting In and Getting On in the Natural History Industry webinar on the 23rd April.

This webinar is part of our plans to launch an Emerging Talent scheme, which will initially be trialled in Bristol and the UK with a view to making it accessible with our global partners, making it a truly international offering.
You will hear from other relatable emerging talent who are studying or have just started out in their natural history careers as they share their experiences and challenges of breaking into the natural history industry. British Bangladesh ornithologist, environmentalist and campaigner for equal rights, Mya-Rose Craig, aka Birdgirl will open the event with a pre-recorded video. Joining the panel live is established wildlife presenter, filmmaker and PhD candidate biologist, Dan O'Neill. Both Mya-Rose and Dan will talk about their routes into the industry. Not only that, you will also get the chance to ask the panelists questions in a live Q&A!
Background to our Emerging Talent Scheme
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the next generation of wildlife filmmakers, conservationists and photographers have missed out on key opportunities; opportunities for work experience, education, up-skilling and with limited access to equipment.
The impact of the pandemic has only heightened the barriers to entry for individuals from marginalised communities and underrepresented groups. So, to empower the future natural world storytellers and ensure the future of the industry is as inclusive as possible, we will build a masterclass and mentorship package.
Emerging Talent Survey
We have sent out a survey for Emerging Talent to complete to guide in developing the offering of the scheme - for emerging talent, curated by emerging talent. We will also utilise our connections in the industry to help pull a programme of relevant content together.
From the survey we found that only 25% of 85 respondents felt that the industry is supportive of Emerging Talent and that the top three resources they want support with are:
1. Mentorship Schemes
2. Platform to Network with Industry
3. Skills Based masterclasses
What's Next?
It is clear that there is a need for our scheme. To reiterate, we will trial in Bristol and branch out to a worldwide audience. We will use our incredible experience delivering the first virtual edition of Wildscreen Festival last year to source expert speakers to mentor and support our emerging talent. We expect to reach 100 individuals within the first year of the scheme.
The Big Give Fundraiser
Throughout 22-29 April, we will be fundraising to support our Emerging Talent scheme. The Big Give - a non-profit, charitable website that enables donors to find and support charity projects in their field of interest - are match-funding all donations we receive up to £2,500 - increasing the impact of your funds and helping us support more emerging talent. As part of the fundraising activity we're doing a T-Shirt campaign with Everpress to sell 100 t-shirts designed in collaboration with Tom Abbiss Smith.
