Welcome to the Myra Canyon Trestles, located near Kelowna, British Columbia! These historic railway trestles are part of the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) and are renowned for their stunning engineering and scenic beauty.
They were built in the early 20th century with the Myra Canyon section, completed in 1914, featuring numerous trestles and two tunnels. Handrails were added in the 90's before a fire in September of 2003 burned 12 of the trestles down. Thankfully, the site was designated a National Historic Site in January of 2003 and the restoration was completed from 2004-2008.
Fast forward to 2023 and it was time for re-decking to happen! And to increase safety for the users it was decided that the decking span the entire width of the trestles instead of just the centre.
After 6 months our Rec team has completed the re-decking. This project involved 3800m2 of decking and a grand total of 59,148 5" ardox spiral nails which equals a whopping 473,184 hammer swings!Tackling these monumental structures was an incredible achievement, and looking across the canyon, it was hard not to think of the pioneers who first carved out this line over 100 years ago. We’re proud to add our name to the many who have contributed to the restoration of these historic trestles to ensure that future generations can have safer access to explore a piece of our province’s history. But more than that, we’re proud to be able to be a part of improving safety for the community, and tourists, to access this outdoor space.A huge shoutout to Pacific Rim Rentals, BC Fasteners, and Waste Connections of Canada for their invaluable assistance. From rentals and sourcing nails to clean-up, these companies were essential to the project's completion. And a big thanks to Kevin at AECOM for his endless knowledge and enthusiasm both technically and historically. We'll have another video coming out to hear more about the history of the trestles and the 2004-2008 rebuild from Kevin - watch for that next week!We sure enjoyed working up here and hope you can get out and walk in the footsteps of history too.
Access is via either June Springs Road to enter on the Ruth Station side or Myra Forest Service Road to enter on the Myra Station side. The Myra station is where bike rentals are located!
Remember, it is illegal to fly drones in Provincial Parks without permission.
