This is actually a big match, but this whole series of matches Kramnik versus Anand came in ten years late. Vladimir and Vishy were to meet at the end of the nineties, when they were Kasparov's main two opponents in the fight for the chess crown.
That's even what Garry thought! In 1998 he tried to have them play a qualifying match together... but Anand refused. Two years later, in 2000, he refused once more - this time, a match against Kasparov, thus giving Kramnik his spot. Kramnik seized his chance, took the World Champion down, after which chess history took a new turn.
As the "Classical World Champion", Kramnik played matches for the title against Leko in 2004 and against Topalov in 2006, whereas Anand became the FIDE World Champion, first in the knockout format in 2000, and later in a round robin championship in 2007. They faced off thanks to a series of unifying measures in 2008, when chess, eventually, was awarded one and only one World Champion.
The 38 year-old Anand won, by showing incredible drive... He did so unequivocally, not giving the 33 year-old Kramnik a chance in their match in Bonn, by winning 6.5-4.5, thus becoming the new King of chess.
"In this match I played the role of Kasparov -says Kramnik, blaming himself-. I made all the possible mistakes, and he severely punished me, as I had done myself before!"
Why did Kramnik lose? What did he do wrong? What was Vishy Anand's secret? Could Vladimir rematch him, did he have such an option? You will learn about this and much more, in an open discussion between Ilya Levitov and former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik.
