This is fascinating. Never realised how much stance affects your comfort levels on the shot

Veey interesting video for me here and highlights the confusion between the two stances...and indeed the two top players ever doing two different things..Joe and Steve Davis, both standing completely differently and yet achieving the same thing..straight line consistemcy under pressure. I tried the more comfortable Joe boxer stance and it seemed ok in practise..but let me down in matches. Switching to the Steve Davis stance (square) I imediately saw a difference. Puzzled by why this could be I used the large mirror in the gents toilet at work to see what my stance looked like. This was especially helpful as there was a vertical line connecting the two panels together and allowed me to see where I was placing my vertual cue as I got down on the shot. It soon became clear using mirrors that the boxer stance was throwing me off to the right waaay too much to the point I was surprised I was potting anything. It all comes down to being very individual. Dont listen to or cooy others on technique...its totally personal and must be discovered through your own fine tweaking.

100% Steve, and it took me years of taking on unhelpful dogma before I could work out my own optimum way of playing. However, I would advise caution in making a habit of leaning over in public toilets! I do love the sound of those two panels together to give that perfect line - what a gift!

can you please tell me which hip do you sit on when you are about go to down ? i think i over turn my hip or i might be sitting on wrong hip, my cue butt is always to the left of line of aim, offline. and i am sure the hip is causing it, do you sit on your right hip or left hip ? my right leg (leading leg) from behind looks like this \ and lots of gap between grip hand and the trouser pocket. please help me thank you

Kyren Wilson has a fairly unique stance. Turned in (pigeon toed) and actually hobbles into the shot rather than walking in. Similar to the old golfers (Arnold Palmer etc) who used it in an effort to keep the legs steady throughout the putting stroke. Looks real awkward but if it took me into the top ten I'd use it 😜

Yup - not sure he is as stable as he could be though and his cue is certainly too close to the cushion on many shots esp the break off shots.

Snooker Coaching At The Snooker Gym I agree. All these stance whether boxer stance or snooker stance are just a stance anyone could be successful regardless of what they choose. Stance is not a solution to play good snooker, it’s just a personal preference

What puts him in top 10 is practice everyday I think this guys play 10 hours a day at least. and some fundamentals and coaching to make sure technique is consistent

Thanks Nick. I used your videos to find my vision center, but I am finding it very awkward to have the cue under my left eye when I am right handed. Been doing it wrong for years. Do I need to alter my stance to keep facing forward?
@TheSnookerGym

For sure yes - the stance optimisation process must allow a comfortable placement of the head position in its vision centre. You can experiment with right foot angle / position relative to line of aim, left foot distance outwards and forwards. Also the angle of the left knee (assuming you are right handed )

Hi coach, would you make a video on the "chest to the cue" claim? Normally I cue with the cue sticks to my chest as it gives me stability while feathering. My cue would throw off line a bit since my wrist hits the rib after the follow through, and as a result I have to shorten my follow through of my shot, i.e. squeezing the cue at the end. I'm not sure what should I do: should I move the away from my chest (lower it down)? Thank you coach. Greeting from Hong Kong :)
