Today, in the times of modern research and technology we humans are still living with stigmas and myths about diseases common in our society. By addressing some of the myths associated with TB, we can help vanish the stigma away.
Dr. Mukhtiar Zaman has got extensive experience of 30 years, managing patients suffering from variety of chest diseases on in-patient and out-patient basis in United Kingdom and Pakistan. Pulmonology
Human body relies on proper, healthy functioning of the respiratory system and breathing. If the respiratory system is disturbed the whole body starts responding to it affecting other internal organs. Pulmonology refers to a specialised branch of internal medicine that primarily focuses on the respiratory system and diseases that infect it. The respiratory system includes mouth and nose, sinuses, throat (Pharynx), voice box (larynx), wind pipe (trachea), bronchial tubes, lungs and diaphragm.
The Department of Pulmonology at RMI is well equipped with almost every facility necessary for respiratory disorders’ care. Inpatient and outpatient services are available including diagnostic evaluation, clinical management and treatment with its own dedicated ICU and faculty. The department offers inhouse diagnostic as well as clinical and surgical management. The department of Interventional Radiology works closely with the Department of Pulmonology for modern diagnostic procedures.
Our Services
Services offered at the RMI’s Department of Pulmonology are below.
Thoracentesis
This procedure is similar to thoracostomy. The gap between pleural membranes has a fluid which helps reduce rubbing of these membrane when breathing. Sometimes the fluid becomes too much and makes breathing difficult. So, a needle is inserted into the pleural cavity to remove excess pleural fluid and make breathing easy.
Reasons for Thoracentesis
It can also help diagnose many conditions such as:
• Congestive heart failure (CHF), when heart can’t pump blood efficiently; the most common cause of pleural effusion.
• Viral, fungal, or bacterial infections
• Cancers
• Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
• A blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism)
• An area of pus in the pleural space (empyema)
• Liver failure
• Tuberculosis (TB)
• Pneumonia
• Reactions to medicines
Bronchoscopy
It is a testing procedure where a tube with a camera at the tips is inserted into the airway through mouth or nose to take a good look inside for any infections or any other disorders.
Reasons for Bronchoscopy
Common reasons for needing bronchoscopy are:
• Persistent cough
• Infection
• Something unusual seen on a chest X-ray or other test
Bronchoscopy can also be used to:
• Obtain samples of mucus or tissue
• To remove foreign bodies or other blockages from the airways or lungs
• To provide treatment for lung problems
Pleuroscopy
Pleuroscopy Also known as Thoracoscopy, is a minimal invasive medical procedure in which a small cut is made between the ribs to insert a small camera (called a pleuroscope) into the pleural cavity. This is the fluid-filled space between two membranes (pleura) that surround the lungs.
Reasons for Pleuroscopy
It is most common diagnostic procedure after bronchoscopy and is usually done after the less invasive procedures such as CT Scan, MRI, or ultra sound. Following are some reasons for which bronchoscopy is done:
• For checking the pleural cavity for any abnormalities like: infections, pleural cancer, or lung cancer.
• Also, for checking the outer view of the lungs, which cannot be done through bronchoscopy.
• For taking tissue samples for cancer test (biopsy).
• Sometimes the pleural membrane is damaged, and the fluid leaks out. Through pleuroscopy any such leakages are checked.
