The rock cuts/faces look great…even greater with that NS train running against it 😊

The rock cuts look really good. Very realistic. The opening at the old mine load out where you said you might put an opening for vehicles to come in and out is a good idea. You might want to make it wider so it looks more like a natural valley sloping up to the larger hills the rock cut is through. Then put a road in the middle of the valley and being a wider area through there the road could curve away behind the hill one way or the other on the backdrop. Maybe include a small creek or wash through the valley beside the road as well coming across under the road and track through an old rusty pipe that you could put sticking out from under the track at the edge of the layout. In the Appalachian mountains there's almost always a creek or wash in those areas where two big hills come down into a smaller valley. Its usually what's made the valley. Your layout looks better and better with each video I see. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Just a thought on the controller with sticky buttons. I have done this with remote controls for tvs, vehicle alarms, any sort of push button remotes. If you can split the case the rubber numeric keypad should just pull out, wash it in warm soapy water and let dry thoroughly. While it is drying spray the small push button contacts that are on the circuit board of the controller with a contact cleaner. Once re-assembled you may have to work the numeric buttons (keypad) a bit, but all functions should return, and be consistent. Hope that works. Layout looks great!!

I had a look in the controller and I don't think I can access the buttons without making it worse.

Fair enough. Lots of time the cases split, a top and a bottom, is how that would have to work.

Thanks for the update. Norfolk Southern is an eastern US railroad and the Appalachian Mountains are alternating ridge lines and valleys. A mountain ridge in the background would look good. Railroads served multiple mines on the line and the Bailey coal mine is serviced by NS and has similar load outs as your new kit. Just a suggestion. Looking forward to your next video

@@nessriverrailroad1299 it’s where I grew up and will soon be moving back to now that I’m retired. I can’t wait to be able to rail fan around the Pittsburgh area on a regular basis again.

Thanks for the update David. You did an excellent job on extending and blending the rock wall. Using the set track pieces molded to an accurate radius is something others could benefit from rather than struggling with forming and soldering flex-track for a minimum radius curve. Take care and keep up the good work. Art...

Thanks as always Art, I was tearing my hair out trying to get it right and when I thought of using the set track curves for these sections I wondered why I hadn't done it sooner. I was lucky to find an online shop over here that had stock so I got the parts in a matter of days.

I like the idea of keeping the old load out whilst also having a modern flood loader David. Will you have it on a loop or a through track with a run round loop ?
@nessriverrailroad1299

I'm thinking of putting it on a loop which would be the sensible and easy option. I did have a silly idea one night that I could put it through a wall to make it a through run but that may be a bit too ambitious and unnecessarily complicated, but I do like a challenge.

Rock wall looks great but I think because it is a very lone continous feature, you need to interrupt it, for better visual interest. What I mean is something like that Flat Irons tunnel on Art Houston's Grande Pacific RR, kzitem.info/news/bejne/2qeqx5Z5omKXnXo. He also has a video on how he built it if you want the nitty gritty parts kzitem.info/news/bejne/mnir1J2hsmOpZIY. Another suggestion is when you are entering your S curve after the rock wall, you said you were going to change it. I suggest to make it a rock cut instead (track between rock sides) while making the fascia taller in the section so that train disappears from view for a moment while going through the rock cut. This two ideas will significantly improve the visual interest in this section, while also making it feel further apart and a longer run (because of the interruptions in view).

Before you write off the decoder, have you tried the factory reset (input "8" in CV8), it wipes out any CV's you've changed before, but it's brought decoders back from the dead for me.

I fear it's more terminal than just a reset as when I put the loco on the track it trips the system out.
