I'm a Black American born and raised in New York City, but since relocated. As kids, mom would take us to every parade: Puerto Rican, Irish, Caribbean, etc. I would have loved to see this parade younger. Glad the beautiful people of Haiti are being celebrated.

Yes, we Americans need to know EVERYTHING about Haitians. Was the black and red a altar with a wide range of symbols, Jesus on a cross beside a candle with a skull and cross bones, beside foods that the spirits like - popcorn and coffee. Really?? the undead like popcorn and coffee LOL

We work, out of our country, (and in our county) with the difference that we do not follow the legacy of one of our former presidents.

There is always a first.Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Americans of Irish heritage, Americans of Italian heritage have parade in Manhattan and the other boroughs. Glad you appreciate the effort of the Haitian diaspora and that of Haitian professionals who flew from Haiti to add their touch. This parade is as important as Labor Day Parade/Caribbean carnival.

Haitians have been conditioned to stay in battle after decades of trauma. It was refreshing to see the Haitian Parade covered in NY1 news. Let’s change the narrative

Why was the Haitian flag black and red? On October 8, 1804, Dessalines proclaims himself Emperor and takes the name Jacques I. On May 20, 1805 he adopts a new flag of two vertical bands; one black, for Death, and one red, for Freedom.

Next year more people will join now that they see it as a parade not kanaval. These floats displayed some of the traditional dresses from different eras. There are complaints about lack of advertisements. It was advertised. Some Haitians didn’t take it seriously as the location was Central Park West area. My question? Why not?
