This video is dynamite. I'm currently on lesson 10, and this video clears up a lot of confusion for me. Especially the Somewhere/Anywhere six word salad that Genki tries to explain. I'm going to take your advice in just looking up each term, and memorizing them as expressions. Gonna go in the Anki deck. Thanks again boss. This came just in time before my next lesson with my iTalki tutor.

My professor has sucked the JOY out of learning a new language. Every time I get feedback it's literally 'this doesn't make sense'...and its frustrating to try to figure out what I did wrong- when I've already submitted a paper after proofreading a dozen times over. And it doesn't help that the classwork and powerpoints talk about Japanese culture, meanwhile, we're left to figure out the grammar on our own. (sure Genki text helps - but the homework assignments never follow the book.) All In all, thank you for these lessons. Sigh. Finding these has been worthwhile. It's really saved my sanity here.

I'm not sure if this is a good way to think about it, but when I think of "より", I like to think of it as "compared to". For example in the video, 味噌らーめんの方が醤油より美味しい。I think of it as "Compared to soy sauce ramen, miso ramen is delicious." BTW, thanks for making these videos. I'm reviewing Genki 1 after not studying for almost 2 years (if not more) and only learning through co-workers or the in-laws talking. I'm slowly gaining confidence with at least the basics of Japanese.

@@ToKiniAndy oh for real? OK well now I feel like I am working too fast. I recently bought Genki II, but I think I will move on to it when I literally understand every single.that is in Genki I. It’s just like I said, I plan on attending Japanese language school. I do not mind if there are a few things that I do not pick up because I’m sure I would cover it at the school. I’ll have to download that flash card app to memorize every single vocabulary word. I know most but not all Chapter I- Chapter IX I only use Genki for studying. Like I said, I’ll be getting your thing for additional studying before moving on to Genki II. So, I shouldn’t buy the Patreon?

In the section at 44:10, is there any reason why you teach やった and どうやって as set phrases rather than as conjugations of やる (to do)?
@ToKiniAndy
3 жыл бұрын
While "やった" is the short past of やる, it is also used as an expression meaning "Yay!", Which is how I used it here. It comes from やる so I could have explained it that way, but most people learn it as something separate (Japanese kids included). Pretty much the same goes for どうやって which is listed in many dictionaries as an expression all on its own. Because it's so common as a set phrase, it made more sense for me to explain it as one. Though almost all set phrases CAN be broken down into whatever words they came from, I made a judgement call here to not go further into it. Hope that makes sense!

Hey Andy, I like your content, but I found the somewhere and nowehere section to be confusing. I know you said that you weren' t going to go through every phrase, but I would have liked at least a list of what phrases we should look up on our own time. I know that you don't like some parts of Genki, but I it's helpful to read out the section that you're correcting. Rather, just say skip this part, and here is what I will teach you. As an example , at 33:49-35:52 , you go over all of the some- and any- phrases, only to redefine them in a couple minutes. This, coupled with an unclear outline as to what expressions we should research and memorize, leads to me leaving this section of the lession not knowing what I should know.
@ToKiniAndy
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback @Nutterscn. I apologize for being confusing. I was pointing out that adding a particle to one of these phrases actually changes the meaning completely (meaning that there are about 20+ phrases, as opposed to 6). So my intention was to say to look up these phrases with all of the different particles listed and see what the differences are. So I didn't so much change my definitions, as point out that the meanings change completely based on particles. The list of phrases at the beginning of this section still mean exactly what I said they mean. Adding the new particles makes NEW phrases. So it's important to learn each of these separate from each other, and treat, for example, 何でも and 何も as SEPARATE vocabulary to learn in the way you normally learn single words. Hope that clears it up a little. Thank you again! I do strive to be comprehensible, but I don't always succeed sadly.
