The most popular 64 game, in my friend group, is Micro Machines 64. It's single screen and top down, and it's incredibly fast and you die when you fall too far behind on the screen, or leave the track for too long. Of course, the DC was already second gen. 3D. I have both consoles (among others) and the used games for DC (or even new ones, when they got rid of it in stores) were so much cheaper. Alright, if you haven't played it, Rush 2049 definitely deserves better than an honorable mention with no context. For me, it was the first game to allow a car to have wings for glide effects, and then tracks designed around you gliding, and tricking in mid-air. Since Rush 2049 began it's life as an arcade, like the rest of the Rush series, it had to be scaled back and downgraded into compatibility with the various console ports it's received over the years. However with that grew new features not present in the arcade. New-to-the-time mode was the stunt tracks, where you'd set a time limit, and push your aerial flight skills to the max for high scores, a game mode not found on any other rush games. 4 different stunt tracks, and I think about 12 different courses. It had coins to collect scattered in the hardest to find locations, and cheat codes available that were even harder to input successfully. You are remiss sir, REMISS, for skimping on the treasure that is Rush 2049. Unfortunately it's best version on home console isn't the N64 version, as it became bundleware for the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 compilation disc. I recommend going with the Xbox original version because of that native 720p compatibility, and if you have a hacked console, it's not too much more effort to load in the trainers for a quick fix on maxed out car specs. (Pulling that Z-trigger to pull out those wings on the original N64 controller sure was satisfying though.)

Some even have the nostalgic "property of" blue tamper proof stickers! Alas.. my physical media has all been packed away for safe keeping. I wish I had a collection like yours, but through the years it was hard to hang on to anything.. especially in the days of wheeling and dealing stuff like Pokemon cards for high value items. A Charizard for 007 GoldenEye seemed like a great idea at the time. Lol. Thanks for sharing this and all your other nostalgic throwbacks with us. Stay well, my friend.

Star Wars Pod Racer was my absolute favorite. I've never been a huge fan of the Star Wars franchise, but the music, the sense of speed and the levels just came together perfectly. I'm really excited for the re-release!

Another fantastic video. I always get excited about an N64 or PS1 video. The late '90s and early 2000's were always jam packed with awesome games!

One cool thing about episode one racer on the N64 was that you could actually use two controllers at the same time, one joystick controls the left engine and the 2nd joystick controls the right engine...just like in the movie!!

I'm glad San Francisco Rush 2049 got a shout out near the end, I have so many memories with that game. Its probably my number one racer on the system.

I'm a fan of most of the games on this list, especially Diddy Kong and Star Wars, but there is one N64 racing game I've never heard anyone talk about. Hot Wheels Turbo Racing is an incredible racing game for its time and completely unique from the other games on the list. It totally deserves its own spot. The (partially licensed) soundtrack alone was incredible. It actually convinced me I needed metal in my life....when I was 6! It's as if I'm the only person who knows that gem exists, and it's a travesty. I still have my copy I got from Blockbuster and it still holds up. Edit: I forgot to mention, Lego Racer is another gem I never see anywhere and it's probably my favorite racing game on the system.

Hey Metal Jusus, the reason why Beetle Adventure Racing reminds you of early Need for Speed games is because it was published by Electronic Arts who were initially working on their new Need for Speed game for the 64 but then signed a deal with Volkswagen!

Ridge Racer 64 is probably my favorite racer on the console! It's always overshadowed by its PS1 counterparts like Ridge Racer Type 4. But, it adds enough gameplay tweeks and vehicles to keep you coming back for more! I definitely wanna see you cover it next time!

Re_Volt is a hidden gem for me. I remember playing this on PC with friends. It only had a local multi-player, if I remember, so I had created a VPN so we could fake a local network. Really cool game.

Cruis N' USA is the first video game of my own. I grew up in the 90s and before the N64 was not mine, older cousin and older brothers of my friends had NES SNES and Genesis but N64, this was mine. So cool.

If the SNES was known as an RPG powerhouse, then the N64 should be known as a racing game power house.

I can not wait to get another N64 console. I love silly arcade racing games. Looking forward to playing the Diddy Kong, Mario Kart, and Mickey Mouse racing games with my daughter. I'm introducing her to the older games and we slowly working our way to the newer and refined HD games we have today. You giving us great feed back into retro games makes it so easy for us to pick and choose what games to invest into. Thanks MJR you never disappoint 🤘

You should mention that Star Wars Racer on N64 can be played with two controllers to mimic the actual craft controls. Only the N64 had that feature.

Growing up I never owned Mario Kart for the N64 but I loved Cruise'n World. I played that game non stop and have a lot of good memories with my family. But as an adult I do think about collecting for N64 and picking up some games. It's awesome seeing videos like this one! Hopefully I can pick up some of these one day!

you'd be surprised to learn Beetle Adventure Racing started out as a Need For Speed attempt, but got repurposed.
