@@PaperBanjo64 Tbh, as long as you have the right CRT that you enjoy, then 2 is all you need, or even just 1. Admittedly I now have 6 and counting, just got my first HD CRT T.V (32" Samsung), didn't think that would be possible in the UK as they were not really a thing here unfortunately, it's imo the best possible display for playing everything from PS2 up to the 360, Wii looks awsome on it @ 576p EDTV mode through component. The rest are VGA monitors, I have some really nice ones like a Sony G520, a Sony GDM-5011p which is a pro graphics CRT with an incredible picture quality, I also just got a LaCie Blue IV (incredible monitor) and an LG Flatron 910SB.

Yes, I am in the second camp. I don't want to see blocky pixels on this gen of console that I grew up with, if I'm not on an emulator. I could do a cleaner "upscale" on an emulator, and I have both a gaming PC and a Pi4 (in a fetching old PlayStation case) attached to a 4k flat panel. I watch the videos to see what's out there though, it's certainly cool! And, to be fair, I have refurbished and recalibrated a happy little 90's Trinitron for the OG consoles. For a while, I didn't see the appeal of that, either, being too used to emulators without analog outputs and almost forgetting how the original experience differed. Then I saw that Pis have composite through the headphone jack, and RetroPie images had been created optimized for CRT... so I fixed the Trinitron, experienced relative greatness, and quickly got into OG hardware with mods and flashcarts.

They could even add 3:2 resolutions for GBA games, such as 720x480, which is not only a common resolution but is also a perfect 3X scale of the GBA frame. While GBA on the N64 may seem like a low priority, it's nice for those who like a single machine to be able to play games from multiple consoles.

@@mylifeingamingwell it's easy now to get n64 comp cable at retro access (where i got one) or make your own with something like a psp component cable (i have this too). i already use ypbpr out via borti's advancedrgb mod for n64. i'm a mario 64 speedrunner who wanted better quality for my stream/recordings, but still be able to play on a consumer crt. ypbpr out is the perfect solution for me, it goes ypbpr out into component splitter and then one signal into component input on my consumer trinitron and then another into ossc into capture card. i wanted n64digital to streamline my setup and allow me to just do dual output hdmi into cap card and then ypbpr into my crt. also, i have the rgb2comp retrotink and it is not fun to play on. it might be fine for casual play but there are noticeable artifacts, especially on textures with a lot of horizontal lines, such as the pyramid in SSL on mario64. if it worked well then i would have just used that setup. i encourage anyone who is able to, to test using rgb2comp vs straight ypbpr. it doesn't look the same. as for hdretrovision cables, i cannot speak on those. i haven't tried them but ideally i don't want to convert colorspaces or do any analog to digital conversions either for capturing. here's to hoping ypbpr out on n64digi comes out sooner rather than later.

The aperture grill preset at 960p is my soft setting, and I go all in with deblur and AA patches for the ultra sharp pixelated look that is unique to digital displays. When you have a decent monitor there’s no real need to try and recreate the look

Even though I’ve got an UltraHDMI modded N64 and a (for my CRT) French PAL stock RGB modded system (as based in the UK); I’m still tempted! Will keep and eye on it as it develops and may sell the UltraHDMI system in the future. 🤔😅

Man deblur makes such a huge difference. It's like wiping the vaseline off of the screen. In my personal opinion that's the primary reason for getting and installing this thing. Otherwise, most of these HDMI mods are only marginally better than just using SCART+OSSC.

Man, that vertical scanline really does look good. That's more what I think of when I think of CRT. Never liked regular horizontal lines cos, to me, it doesn't look like what it's trying to mimic. Sonic Mania had maybe the best CRT filter I've seen but this is right there with it. Do hope some modes start using HDR to give the games a little extra light to dark range to better match the brightness of a CRT some day. Hell, at a high enough resolution I imagine you could recreate how a CRT represents each part of a pixel in detail.
@mylifeingaming

[Try4ce] Yeah it really does give it a nice crunchy consumer CRT look for sure! Regular scanlines just look like a PVM, which isn't what everyone is looking for.

This is awesome. However, I think I'll buy a RetroTink 2X-Mini instead, for pricing reasons and because I'm unsure about hardware mods. (I like to preserve the console as it was.) I would have liked more comparisons between unmodded over S-Video (with a RetroTink) and N64Digital HDMI. (Thanks a lot for the video!!!)

[Try4ce] We've done a lot of S-video N64 stuff in our previous videos on the RetroTINK devices. I think the 2X Mini is a hugely practical choice for people who don't want to mod their N64! Includes an S-video cable and everything!

I recommend it, makes colors pop and cleans up the image really nicely even on a basic consumer CRT. Not many people talk about the classic RGB amps these days, but they're still a great option. Personally I even stuck with the built in csync since my board still had it, there's just something enjoyable about using the RGB circuitry Nintendo originally meant to ship.

My experience with N64 RGB differs from the assessment in this video. My TV looked much better with an N64 RGB MOD by Arthrimus tech (I believe based on Borti's) + OSSC over s video + Retrotink mini. Both with deblur on or off look far better than the stock S video. Unsure how much of that is due to the upscaler, but I'm using a cheap Aliexpress OSSC.
@mylifeingaming
3 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] I think on a CRT the jump is really small. With an upscaler, the jump is more noticeable, certainly. But much less noticeable than the jump to RGB for other systems, I feel.

The Nintendo 64, is my favorite video game console of all time, the N64Digital is something I really want to install into my N64 to complete that love. Unfortunately, I just can't afford something like that at this point in time. It would be great if I could get something like this, but alas, it is what it is. Besides, there are RGB mods that are far cheaper as of right now and if anything, I might get one of those before any sort of HDMI mod. Also, I have no soldering skills whatsoever so, yeah, any mods will have to either be done for me or will have to be pre-installed in the system.

[Try4ce] I actually didn't test that, but I would be shocked if they didn't work. My N64 SCART cable is sync-on-composite, which is how HD Retrovision cables pull their RGB for component conversion. That cable works both with my old RGB mod and N64Digital's RGB, and I know for certain that my old RGB mod works with HD Retrovision, so I can't see why the result would be any different.

00:09:49 It would be nice to add a 16:10 aspect ratio option for Donkey Kong 64, which if I'm not mistaken, runs in an FOV of 16:10 in the widescreen mode. 16x10 resolutions would go along well with that, such as 1280x800 or 1440x900.

@mylifeingaming
3 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] You have to understand that I'm showing the results on a native 1440p monitor. Native resolution matters a lot. I don't think native 1200p monitors are common these days. The next comparison shows both at 1200p, so you'll see that they match more closely. If I used to custom modelines to enable 1440p on the HDMI output, then they would look basically the same. Or if I'd shown both on a 1080p monitor, they would look the same. If I'd shown 1080p on a 1080p monitor and 1440p on a 1440p monitor, the relative sharpness of each would be perceived as being pretty much the same. It was not meant to suggest N64Digital HDMI is blurry, it was just showing how RetroTINK offers 1440p without any fiddling, and 1440p monitors are pretty popular. If I'd done the same thing (1200p vs. 1440p) on a 4K (2160p) screen, the two would most likely both look a touch soft, and the difference between them not that great. It's just demonstrating what matching native resolution can do.

It needs to display the native resolution of the game if you come across one that’s 480i. Also, they need a good de-interlacing method.
