RM uses a lot of wordplay for the beginning of his verse. You're right that he's tying in the korean word for *"to dream"* *[꿔]* to *"debt"* bc *"to dream"* in its original *[꾸다]* form also means *"to borrow."* So, another way to read this first line is *"we borrow from others (like a debt)."* And the overall interpretation can be smt like, _"we borrow our dreams from other people"_ That ties into the next line, which can be interpreted as, _"we borrow the dream of 'having to become great' from other people (like a light),"_ with the word *"light" [빛],* in this case, being a homophone of the word *"debt"* [빚] from the 1st verse.

I think when RM said 'we dream from others like a debt', i think it means that the dream is not yours but you take it as yours for society's sake as a debt that you have to pay. Since society expects from everyone to have a dream.

The line "we dream from others (like a debt)" means we look at others and we wish to be like them. And like debt that wish is always in the back of your mind. And the following line just means that we're told by society that we have to be successful and do great things.

I wonder if it also means, our dreams are not our own but the unfullfilled dreams of our parents. Like a debt of unfullfilled dreams passed on from one generation the next? Just a thought.

@@svvemuri That would also make sense. They've never said the meaning of that line so it's very much just how the individual listening to it would interpret it

This song is squarely in my Top 5. The most under appreciated song! It's a crime they have NEVER performed this song. The message, the beat....everyone ATE on this track especially Jimin, J-hope and JK. 💜💜 You got the translation, RM said. it's dreaming THRU others is like a debt. Or like borrowing someone else's dream. Always double check lyrics with Doolset to get the context.

i love that "street" intrigued you enough to explore more of bts' discography - this song (to me) echos their early hip hop sound but at this point they are so so polished and their sound is so honed in it really makes me appreciate their how they've developed their mastery and craft. also, this song goes hand in hand with "love maze" from the same album ... "louder than bombs" is another b-side track that's brilliant and also "tomorrow" (goes to show you the quality of their work when b-sides are this amazing!)

I think your interpretatiom is spot on! And actually RM's we dream from others like a debt can also be interpreted quite literally. I owe so much educational debt now just to achieve my dream, and sometimes I wonder was this even my dream from the start? Or someone else's dream? 😅

Suga's rapping comes from a place of experience and hardships, while Jhope has a lighter sound. You can hear elements of Suga and RM sometimes because he learned from both Suga and RM but cultivated his own style, which until Jack in the Box was way more playful and hopeful. His voice has a raspiness to it that goes in and out maybe by design. He also sings but not as often as we would like. I enjoyed your reaction and look forward to more of them. Borahae!💜

"we dream from others (like a debt)" to me means like how parents force their kids to be a certain thing like a doctor for example that they make their kids study to become doctors without any option for something else so it becomes a debt towards your parents you feel like you owe them to become what they want you to become because they took care of you and raised you etc in many asian countries its like this where they have no option but to be what theyre forced to be and have to get into the top schools if they dont their family acts like theyre a failure its why the suicide rate is the highest in the world in korea cause you have to work hard and go after dreams that arent yours the same way you get debt you never wanted.

this song also hits much harder if you remember how avid bts's early songs were about having dreams no more dream, N.O., they talked so much about how you have to have your own dreams and follow them, instead of giving into what your parents, teachers or society want from you, but as they grew as people and artists, they say that it's okay not to have a dream, this idea of dreaming can become a lot of pressure on us, when in reality, even breathing, making a living and moving on can be difficult enough, so if just that is what you want, that is completely fine and just the fact that your alive is already good enough, you don't have to run (after that promotion, that scholarship, that car) without even knowing why you want it this is a very recurring feeling for everyone, I think, but one basically no one talks about this song is actually incredibly nuanced

The part you were confused "we dream from other (like a debt)" is a word play by using the fact that the pronunciation of "dream (꿈꾸다)" and "borrow money from someone (돈을 꾸다)" is the same in korean.

About the RM's verse "We dream from others like a debt", there is a word play. Korean word "quo" can mean dreaming or borrowing. Also it was almost asking a question internation. So it could interpret as Are we dreaming other's dream or borrowing others' dream? Whichever word you use, it can be interpreted as Are you not having your own dream?

I always interpreted it as meaning that we try to fulfill the dreams of others and it becomes like a debt /burden that we can't achieve or even if we achieve it, it will leave us empty...

was about to explain the debt line, but you got it in the end, to me it carries both meanings you mentioned, but lyrically as someone already explained, it's wordplay on "to borrow" and "to dream" in the Korean language, which Namjoon is known for there's always a double meaning or wordplay or both like in this case.

You should react to jonghyuns ‘crazy (guilty pleasure)’ mv and his ‘y si fuera ella’ live performance. Y si fuera ella is originally by Alejandro sanz but jonghyun translated it from Spanish into Korean by himself and changed some of the lyrics to make it his own. Here are some other song recommendations of his (lonely, before our spring, shinin , moon, end of a day, deja boo, and love belt). It would be amazing if you could react to some of them :))

Paradise was released in 2018 so it IS a bit older... just not their 2013-14 stuff. :) You have to be careful with the fan-made lyric videos... a lot gets lost in translation, especially since RM is such a poet, and different translators will pick different synonyms or interpret a phrase differently. However... a lot of times parents look to their children to fulfill THEIR unrealized dreams... to live vicariously through their kids. So often a kid's "dream" is borrowed from their parent's or kids feel that they OWE it to their parents to fulfill their dreams... so it does feel like a debt.

like a debt' for me it means, when we go for our dream and achieve in that dream, how many people do we owe' [ large and small ] along the way. [ a debt ] it is the people that help you grow, prosper and reach your goals. the members of bts were young 14 to 19 year old kids with a dream of being good singers and artists. through hard work, sacrifice and tears they have 'now, today achieved greatness. in life no matter what your dream or goal is, people directly and indirectly help you along the way [ the bts army ]. you, a person can ''never live another person's dream'' including parents, society or peers, unless it is something that you really want to do like doctor, lawyer, 'singer. they are saying be yourself, be what you want to be, you do not have to follow the norm and be part of the 'crowd, do what makes you happy. in all of bts lyrics they tell a story and give 'advice with the main goal to 'love yourself and be a good, thoughtful, loving person in life. we all struggle and there are many moments of blood, sweat and tears, but that's life. thanks for the reaction, i purple you.

@@arcollins040thomas8 I also don't recall him speaking abt it but it _is_ true that the "kook/guk" in his name basically sounds just like "gook," which IS an offensive slur that's used towards east/southeast Asians, including Koreans.
