Yes, there is a 400Hz tone and the second tone is 15KHz not 15Hz. It allows the bias to be set correctly for the high frequencies, not the lows.

Amazing! Does that mean once the music commences and during the 'bias adjustment' flashing, the audio output may sound a bit muddy until it's finished it's analysis? If so can you then, if you could be bothered, rewind and play from the head again and hear it first 10 seconds or so correctly? Just interested, or am I over-engineering this :)

Thats' a very good question! I'll shoot a second video, however I will say, it never sounds muddy, always bright and clear, some tapes I will notice as it's adjusting the azimuth, the highs will be a touch brighter. I'm curious if I was to rewind after say 10 seconds, if it readjusts, my guess is yes.

+HiFi Enthusiast I'm actually planning to get a Dragon to digitize my tape collection, but this is one thing that kinda makes me hesitating now. Are you really sure it's always adjusting when you rewind after the adjustment is done? Because this doesn't sound really good if you want to digitize tapes. It means the first seconds will always be the "adjustment phase" before you get the perfect sound. Or is there a way to keep the azimuth setting after the adjustment? If not.. then maybe a CR-7 with manual azimuth adjustment would be a better fit for digitizing?

@@symphony137 Owned a Dragon for years the Azimuth adjustment worked so fast that I could never hear any muddy or muddled sound for the first few seconds

I'd say You are over-engineering :) There is no need to adjust the azimuth after rewinding, if the whole side of the cassette was recorded on the same deck with the same head position. Rewinding does not cause the record to be shifted across the tape, thus, no need to adjust the azimuth. And yes, azimuth correction works fast, the only noticeable difference during adjustment is gradually more pronounced trebles, as an adjustment result.

Its a shame that many of the big names from the golden years of audio were subsequently slapped on utter crap as corporations struggled with profit margins in the extremely competitive consumer electronics market of the 90s - Kenwood, Akai, TEAC and the list goes on. I have a Nakamichi branded bluetooth speaker that I bought purely for portable background music but the tonal balance is so utterly borked that I refuse to listen to it, even from the AUX connection. I bought it on the basis of the sale price and the fact that one bluetooth speaker sounded much the same as another in the barn-like 'showroom' I bought it from : lesson learned. Thanks for the video.

sorry but surely the sound comes from the amp and speakers, this delivers a signal useless without a decent playback system ergo a load of pish.

Great deck no arguing that but, Nakamichi 680ZX blows it out of the water for soundstage and deep bass. And don't even try to argue that😂

@@wibblewobble1934 most Nakamichi experts always say, owners who had 680zx went on to the dragon, zx9, zx7, RX505, cr7a only to return to the 680ZX in the end. Why? Because it's the best Nakamichi ever put out. Excluding 1000. Just listen to a Nakamichi 680zx, so warm, so detailed, deep soundstage, seismic bass, tube like midrange...

@@wibblewobble1934 yes, 680zx is the deck most audiophiles return to in the end after trying the Dragon and others. Trust me, it's true!!! 680zx is king on deep tight bass, liquid midrange, tube like highs, wide deep soundstage... any Nakamichi expert will tell you this, and they swear by it. @@tomzielinski9506 I ask do you have any credible source, your response is "yes... ME I just know it" kek. The Dragon will give you a more accurate representation of the music at hand, if you want to debate the 680zx acts like an enhancer sure. But just as when spending lots of money on a top quality D/A, you want something thats accurate, that just gives the music to you straight, as intended from the studio. At least I do.
