You mentioned muscle so think about it, there's 2,000 muscles in that trunk. The are magnificent animals and very clever. I've been to the Kruger park about eleven times. Once, that was in 1996, a herd of elephant wanted to cross the eastern border into Mozambique. The matriarch led the herd to where a tree grew next to the fence and pushed it over onto the fence, damaging it to such an extent, that they could gain access into Mozambique!!!!!!

What's best about this particular video is not that there's much happening, but quite the opposite. It's so quiet, and the bull is able to stand quietly gazing at the humans, allowing a good long view of him and the chance to see how he responds to other creatures. What a beautiful moment that I'm sure all of you will carry for the rest of your lives.

The tour guide is awesome!! He set the boundaries when the Elephant started to put his trunk in to investigate. I have never seen one in person but now I want to. But not at the poor captive abused Elephant's expense. They should all be free to live their lives without humans doing what they do with these magnificent animals!! What an awesome experience!! Yes! That kind of blinking says reams about the gentle soul behind those eyes...also the ear flapping were just simple flapping to help keep him cool...also the slow head movements were another sign this elephant was genuinely, gently curious! Time to bring out (slowly bring out!) a banana...or two-dozen, one at a time...gently, softly speaking/making soft sounds while not staring the guy in the eye, but perhaps at his trunk tip, or ear edges, while duplicating similar head movements...those folks that can wiggle their ears would have a great advantage here....smile now. But gentle words, slow gentle blinks of the eyes, and a banana might have made the beginnings of a wonderful friendship here...pay no attention to the nay-sayers, some elephant are very gently natured, and those are the ones we could strike-up a bush conversation with...along with another banana...one more even bigger smile/grin!

I am 67, and will never travel to Africa from rural Maine, USAI remember first posting to You Tube when we got broadband in rural Maine, from my newly purchased FLIP video camera.Today, I can sit here at home and count the muscle ridges on this tusker's trunk as he inspects you as you drive around his home territory.I am simply awestruck at what modern technology offers us mere humble humans as we attempt to understand our world.THANKS!!!!!!!!!! Hi Rogernamvet, thanks for the comment, we agree that technology is amazing and it brings these wild encounters easily to our pc's and phones. However I would encourage you to visit Africa and experience the African Bush, there is a certain magic that exists here and one can not help but relax and appreciate nature. There is very little WIFI :-) I must however admin that the above Video was the scariest moment I have had wile on a game drive, as incredible as the experience was I dont think I'm in a hurry to get that close again. We are on our way back to Nambiti soon and we cant wait to get there.

It's good I don't have the money and good health to come to Africa, because those roads would be packed with an Interstate highway of tourists like me, but thanks for the invite.I have been in rural Maine, USA, for fifteen years, where just now I heard the barks of coyotes outside my window in the winter past midnight. So it is with some experience that I suggest you enjoy what you have, and not encourage too many people to come and mess up that wonderful natural experience. The rest of us can watch and wonder on You Tube!I have watched hundreds of hours of elephant videos this winter and they amaze me. From what I could tell, that elephant was just as wary of you as you were of him. Notice that neither of you did anything to upset or scare the other. In one video, several elephants wander in to a tent campsite, and one wags his ears and throws dirt. The unarmed guide simply kicks dirt at the elephant, and the elephants all walk off, scared. LOLIn another, the guides are on foot with their human charges, and don't use their guns, but merely point a cane at the elephants (several visiting groups), while crouched in an unthreatening position, and several different sets of elephants GET THE MESSAGE AND LEAVE.... LOLTurns out, the elephants are as scared of us as we are of them, but curious still the same.Apparently, after years of civil wars in Africa, and poachers, with people killing them from moving vehicles, they are quite content to stop and smell you to find that you won't hurt them, and they won't hurt you.I had plenty of that experience with fear while on a guard tower in the Vietnam War, and understand how intoxicating it can be. I kind of guess you'll be sending us more video of you, close up with an elephant. If you want a CHANGE OF PACE, and actually want to HAND FEED, and HAND WASH ELEPHANTS in a stream, I might suggest you visit the most famous ELEPHANT NATURE PARK in Chiang Mai, Thailand. There are hundreds of videos on You Tube about it.These are mostly older retired Asian elephants, with a number of youngsters adopted or born there, and visitors help hand feed them, and then follow them to the river to throw buckets of water over them, or at other parks, actually physically bathe them with large brushes and sponges, which the elephants seem to love. There are NOT wild elephants, and they have a mahout to guide them, but you can actually feed, rub them, and stand among them, and the visitors seem to get the same sense of wonder you experienced in your video. And if you look up PETER BARTON on You Tube, you'll see this famous, classical British pianist, who lives in Thailand, and carries several pianos out to the elephants in the field and PLAYS BEETHOVEN and other classical masters for them. The animals have a sense of rhythm and simply love it. Peter finds more peace of mind playing for an audience of elephants outside in nature, than he did in stuffy classical music venues in Britain. :) To see Peter's face play his favorite music, outdoors, at night with elephants, and the serenity he experiences, is an act of love all over his face!Once again, thanks for your videos and comments. Roger in Maine, USA.

Great video. But what was it about? -- behaviorally? It was a socialization episode, but subdued. This was a brave but well experienced animal. His instincts about these people made him feel comfortable enough to approach and mingle. It was a perfect balance of friendliness and caution on the elephant's part, and the consistent calm of the people present reinforced the elephant's comfort level. But there is more to it. Why did this beast linger for more than a few minutes in the company of a few individuals not of his species when he could have just assessed them and abruptly move on? It's because of two things. One is that, like all social animals, the presence of another physical being gives comfort, and so the 'hanging around with someone for a little while' behavior gives a burst of refreshment and stimulation for a roving lone elephant. The other reason, I believe, is to more firmly imprint the memory of experiences it has had (encounters with any other beings) in order to remember who is good or safe -- and who is too risky or dangerous.

It's in the middle of Afrikaaner land with extremely high security in the surrounding country-side actually for more than one hundred years, if not longer. The big guy's temporal glands were seeping. Study up on musth... at this time of year he is less predictable and volatile.

Really unusual for one to hang around for so long. I wonder if there were snacks onboard and he smelled them.
