Reflecting on our Inspirations
In art creation, two significant factors shape your style: inspiration and influence. While these terms are often used interchangeably, their distinct differences are crucial.
Influence wields a specific, directive force to provoke consistent change. It's about making things happen.
Inspiration, on the other hand, is passive, stemming from emotions or ideas. It uplifts, infuses us with hope, generates new ideas, and gives us a sense of possibility and faith.
Inspiration is immediate and transient, igniting the creative process and motivating us to start projects. It changes rapidly, depending on our situation or circumstances.
Prompt
Begin with this month’s meditation to activate your senses. Allow it to awaken your senses and guide you inward, where you'll uncover and work with your unique source of inspiration.
Once you're centered, gather your art supplies and prepare your workspace. Channel your inspiration and start creating. Don’t overthink this!
What experiences, visions, or feelings drive you to create?
We might say we're inspired by nature, or the strokes of abstract expressionism, yet, there's usually something deeper or more personal behind these inspirations. For me, it's metaphysics and a deeper exploration of the artists and writers of 19th-century Romanticism, which influenced many painting groups in American modernism of the 20th century.

Painters and artists like Agnes Pelton, Arthur Dove, and Georgia O’Keeffe were deeply nourished by Transcendentalism, theosophy, and Eastern mysticism. They drew inspiration from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Nature Essays, Kandinsky’s book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art," and Rudolph Steiner. These philosophers pioneered the process of abstracting the landscape.
Artists of this era prioritized responding to painting through intuition and personal connection rather than explanation. They worked to articulate the concept that spirit is not in us; we are spirit.
This profound understanding is what I strive to capture in my work - a balance between the tangible reality and the ethereal.
As you embark on your artistic endeavors this month, I encourage you to reflect on these concepts. What does your inspiration say about you and your connection to the world around you?
