People are so fickle. If someone sits back and plays a solid groove all you hear is " This is so lame. Anyone can play a backbeat." They hear a chops orientated solo "Oh wow nothing but chops and speed. Wheres the pocket?!." People always find some shit to complain about. Perfect example is my comment about people complaining.

Instead of wankery all over the kit, which he is really damn good at, how about some solid backbeats and groove for longer than a bar and a half? 32nd notes aren't going to allow the heads to speak out to get a solid idea of what these heads are capable of.

I think be played enough to get an idea, as much as we can get from a video cam microphone from a totally unmic'd kit. I am sure you can find other footage of these heads. If they wanted a toddler to come play quarter notes for 10 minutes they would have done that. You knew exactly what you were in for when his name was in the title.

These heads rock. Tone plus attack, best of both worlds. Way better sound with those over the frosted Evans ec2s I was using. Try em if u want attack but don't wanna sacrifice much tone due to it.
@34672rr
9 жыл бұрын
Larry Tate it's more tuning than the heads you hear. The only real way to test is to have the EXACT same tuning, which is almost impossible since the vast majority of drummers tune by ear and are unable to reproduce tunings accurately. While heads do affect the sound, this difference is lost in the wildly different tunings of each kit you hear. There is way more variance in different tunings of one set of heads then there is the same tuning of different heads.
@larrytate1657
9 жыл бұрын
I like the tone much better tuned about the same on my drums. Heads make a big difference IMO. Many drummers tune to a similar tension in similar genres. It's mostly where they tune their resonant head on bottom that's make the biggest difference between drummers sounds IMO. Some tune the bottom head a half turn to a full turn higher than the top giving a nice upward pitch bend and a slightly shorter resonance. Some tune the top and bottom to the same tension which creates the longest resonance and some tune the bottom higher which I don't like except on my tiny 8 inch tom occasionally. I've tried all different heads and am never satisfied with lots of them, then when I get my remo emperors or these I'm happy again. That's not a coincidence every time for. 12 years
@larrytate1657

Oh I think where you lost me was that I was referring to these heads I'm using on my kit that I love the sound of, not Thomas' kit in this video. Lol :)
@34672rr

Larry Tate Heads make a difference but not anywhere near of a difference as tuning. You can't really talk about tuning in terms of lug turns wihtout a reference. I used to think this way until I got a tunebot, which gives extremely precise frequency readings, not only on the lugs but the fundamental of the drum, which is just as important. I had been tuning by ear for so long, but didn't realize how crude of a method this is, even if you have perfect pitch, which few drummers have. Because the heads are not independent of each other like two strings on a guitar, a 1/4 turn or something on one head will affect the lug frequency of the other and the fundamental. While this method has been used by drummers forever, the result is a drum that sounds unpitched. That is the sound you will hear with almost every kit out there, but I have found it does not have to be that way and the drums can sound sooooo much better. I have been experimenting with different tunings, heads and shells, and have achieved a "perfect" tuning, or at least perfect for what I am going for, which is pure harmonicity between the drums. The result is that the drums not only are in perfect scale notes, but the sympathetic resonances sound beautiful. Most drummers will mic the top of their drums because all of that sour resonance sounds like crap.
@larrytate1657

I disagree I feel heads make a pretty big difference especially clear to coated and head thickness. I've always found Evans two ply heads to be thicker than remo and deaden the tone down too much for my taste. I'm not saying heads made a bigger difference than tuning foes but after 12 years I know how I like my tops head tension to feel. After tuning different heads all the same as I do I have found that specific give me more tone and the sound I like and others do not. If heads don't matter much for your sound, maybe your sound is more generic than what I look for. I use high end gear and like a lot of tone a la Gavin Harrison, Benny greb sound. Gavin will only use remo coated emperors and controlled sound coated on his snare. He won't use any other Remo heads even so apparently I'm not alone on my experiences
