"Nana" is an age-old Andalusian folksong that appears to have been brought to Spain by gypsies from India. The song was written down and harmonized by Manuel de Falla, who first heard it from his mother, and features in his "Siete canciones populares españolas" ("Seven Spanish Folksongs"). The piece has been widely transcribed as an instrumental work for various combinations. The lyrics, sweet and tender, are the murmured endearments of a mother putting her baby to sleep: "Duérmete, niño [...] Duerme, mi alma [...] Lucerito de la mañana". Manual de Falla (1876 - 1946) is widely regarded as one of the greatest Spanish composers. His work includes music for ballet, opera, chamber music, Spanish songs, piano music and zarzuelas. He wrote his "Siete canciones populares españolas" in 1914 while living in Paris, shortly before the outbreak of World War I compelled him to return to Madrid. The series features folk songs and dances from different regions of Spain (Murcia, Asturia, Aragon, and Andalusia).
