The Korg Nano Kontrol 2 turns on once you start the computer. As far as which buttons to hold down when connecting the USB cable will depend on what software program you use. You can get the PDF file at their website but the Nano Kontrol 2 does come with instructions.

I imagine it probably can. Some people have made it work with Photoshop and 3-D animation software. I simply wanted the Korg nanokontrol2 to work like a generic audio board.

Hi Andy, many thanks for your review of this unit. Certainly lots of good info to consider. Looks to be a neat and solid unit for a good price - and I like the fact you can use each of the faders to change different parameters in different software. I have to agree that 30mm is a tad too small for my work... I only tend to use manual automation to replicate the human expressions of a classical orchestra rather than the mechanical ones of a machine - and having 100mm gives me more refinement and feel in the phrasing. With that said, 30mm is certainly useable on a machine that seems geared more toward portable use - and the other aspects you mentioned such as the layout and LEDs etc are probably there to keep the price, size and weight to a minimum (tho, is having 60 or 100mm really any problem if it would only produce a unit of similar size to a laptop?). It certainly looks a lot more solid than the NanoKeys v1 that I had bad luck with and is certainly something I would consider with a laptop and rucksack. With desktop use, I'd prefer something with 100mm (even 60 seemed a bit small on my old Korg D1600) - but with motorised faders, so that I could punch in some automation without having to manually adjust the fader level first. I don't know if you have had any mixing desks / control surfaces with motorised faders that have broken down before, but surely the fader itself would still work even if the motor didn't...thus being as good as a non-motorised fader until fixed? I'm thinking next to get the Mackie Control Universal Pro - which has been around for a while - for my desktop system and have a separate extender. MCU Pro does a much better job of hooking the controller and extender to look like one unit than the original MCU. Apart from the extra buttons on the MCU itself (some of which I have put to use before now), just wondered what thoughts you had on those... Anyway... thanks again for the review. 👍🏼from me.

I think you might find the Korg nanoKontrol 2 Demonstration video interesting. kzitem.info/news/bejne/w6t7tGSFfJ2QY6g I like the simple layout. And even if you did, the unit should come with track up / down buttons so you could navigate through them. You should see the track select buttons in the video. I don't think there is an audio control surface that wouldn't have those buttons. They could have an LED screen that says track 1-8, 9-16, 17-24 etc. If I had 16 channels/tracks I don't think I would need to make use of the track select buttons that often. If I did I would just buy two : )

Andy - quick update... Just looked at the Korg website after many years and noticed they also have a nanoKONTROL Studio. There are still only 8 sliders, the measurements of which aren't given, but they look like they cover almost half the entire unit width of 160mm... It also comes with a jog/shuttle wheel, a scene and a ◀️to start button (which I've always found convenient, tho I'm guessing that on your nanoKONTROL 2, pressing stop twice might do the same thing). They do have the Solo/Mute/Record (and Select) above the sliders and look like they only illuminate in white (more neutral)... but it may be something you'd be interested in if only to have bigger sliders. Don't know how much it is tho.
@TechTVusa

I have seen that already. I am not sure if they are 60mm faders. I noticed the solo, mute and record are above the faders and end up taking up way to much space.

Hmmm... Ok. I'm going to check the size for myself anyway. I'm pretty sure the faders are bigger judging by the measurements of the whole unit. If so, I might end up getting one since the whole unit seems to be laptop sized and would fit into my rucksack easily.

I love the layout of the Korg nanoKONTROL 2. I wish they did have a 60mm fader version of it. It would still be small. A 100mm option would be nice. Having said that the Icon Platform M Plus has the layout I want. I may get that if I can ever save up the money. I almost bought that but didn't have enough money at the time. The nanoKontrol works OK for now.

@@davidosolo Hmmm... it's an advantage, - maybe only a big one mostly for those who plan to keep the nK STUDIO some distance away from the computer. Similarly, the advantage the nK 2 has over the STUDIO is that it carries the same functions in a smaller box (albeit with smaller faders) - but since both would very easily fit in a laptop bag, again it's not a big one iThinks. But thanks for pointing that out. Personally, I like to try to avoid cables with portable units where possible. On a side-note as far as I'm concerned, the one big advantage both the nK 2 and nK STUDIO have over both of my old nKEY 1's is that neither (hopefully) would see the inside of a rubbish bin after the controls / keys fall off after only a few weeks. :-(

@@TechTVusa Fair enough, and I think your review was mostly really good. I don't agree that saying something is much bigger or smaller than expected is a very valid criticism of a product though, considering that manufacturers always publish the dimensions and you can easily check them before you buy. It's totally fine to say it's too big or too small for your needs, but if your expectations are out it's on you for not checking. Again, I liked your review so I don't mean to sound too harsh, it's just a point to always check before buying gear.

I have a love hate relationship with the NK2 I love it when it works and I hate it when it does not. My problem is not the hardware but the software ie the drivers. I have had 2 instances of the Editor not recognizing the ports after Windows 10 updates and then spending too much time trying to find a fix. I use it to send CC data to VIs in Presonus Studio 1. After a recent update it failed to send the data even with the latest version of the drivers ( btw it works perfectly if I want to run the mixer and transport in Sudio One but I don't) so I needed something more reliable. This week I bought a Subzero Mini controller. Similar layout to the NK2 but slightly bigger almost the width of a keyboard. More importantly it does what I need it to do plus you can run different scenes. I need something reliable and I can not afford to be hunting around for solutions everytime there is an update....I want to make music. I payed £35 for it so a similar price to the NK2. Korg need to make their drivers more robust and they have known about this problem for quite a few years. Regards. Colin
