Buying story
My fiancé and I are big into hiking and being outdoors throughout the entire year. Especially during the summer, we spend as much time as possible taking trips to the mountains. We bring everything from our mountain bikes to hiking gear, to camping equipment and lawn chairs. The key, is to stay compact with everything in one vehicle so that we can get out as much as possible.
Camping in the mountains is beautiful but! there's that one dreaded moment we all face, crawling into that tent, or worse, forgetting to set it up! It sucks, and you start to grumble about how much you hate tenting and the whole idea of camping. Still, if you're like us, on a budget, tenting is still the best option. We also live in a condo and have no space to store an RV or trailer, so to stay on budget and stay practical, tenting is our best option.
Now, the obvious short comings of a tent are; they’re small, they’re cold, can't stand up inside, and you hear everything...Don’t get me started on those microscopic grains of sand that destroy your air mattress! Who likes waking up on the ground in the cold? You can’t store anything in them because of wildlife risks and even if you did, there's no room. How about rain? Ever woken up soaked in your “waterproof tent”? I have. No matter how “waterproof” a tent is, there is always water that comes through somehow. Ever had to pack up and leave in the rain? Oh! changing outfits in a tent? You know the dance, putting your pants on while hunched over, then falling backwards onto the air mattress (if you’re lucky to have filled it up yet) then finishing like a turtle wiggling on your back. Yep, that's tenting. But for all of these shortcomings, is there any alternative that isn't a multiple thousand dollar RV!?
Having purchased a new SUV in 2018, we wanted to get out more, but still loathed tenting. What if we slept in the SUV instead? I started searching for options and other people who where doing this, and how.
First, which seemed quite popular, was those tents that go on top of your car. They look cool, but they’re just as expensive as a tent trailer! So, I started searching for better, taller, more expensive tent, and stumbled across this Hatchback style tent from Napier that I could pick up from Cabela's. I liked the idea of being able to return it if it was a bust, but the quality seemed great and it looked easy to connect with our SUV, "that's it!" we could sleep in the SUV Cab with the seats down, and use the tent for storage, changing, even setting up a little table and chairs if it rains.
Although this tent is double the price compared to similar medium to large tents, around $400 (CAD), we were ok with that because, to be quite honest, I have never been that comfortable with or trusting of the strangers you come across at a campground. For sleeping at least, we have peace of mind inside the cab of our SUV, and can still lock it up when we go to bed.
In a lot of ways, I wouldn't consider the hatchback tent, a tent. Rather, it's better way to utilize the space of my SUV. I convert the cab area for a place to sleep, and the attached tent is where I keep my clothing and other items. The Napier Sportz Hatchback Tent enables us to go tenting while being warm, quiet and safe. I love it.
