The basilica sanctuary of Gesù Vecchio is located in the heart of the historic center of the city. The temple is called "del Gesù Vecchio" (or dell'Immacolata di Don Placido) due to the fact that subsequently, due to the expansion of the Society of Jesus, a new and much larger church known as the church of Gesù Nuovo was built a short distance away. The basilica was founded in 1554 and between 1608 and 1623 the church was rebuilt based on a design by Father Pietro Provedi. The church was opened for worship a year later. The dome was frescoed in the late nineteenth century by Onofrio Buccino, who also repainted the four panels with the Apostles located on the side walls of the transept while Vincenzo Paliotti is responsible for the frescoes in the apse area. Behind the high altar, a double ramp, characterized by a procession of stucco angels, leads to the large apse machine, at the center of which is the venerated wooden statue of the Immaculate sculpted by Nicola Ingaldi. From the left chapel of the transept you enter the old sacristy, where an Adoration of the Magi by Pino and numerous display cases containing ancient wooden statues are kept.
