What an incredible solo by Wayne! His tone, note choices, ideas and form were all so enjoyable. No doubt it helps to be accompanied by an all-star band.

one of many things fascinating abut Walden: how hard he plays coming out of a hotel, as a teenager in Europe with Mahvishnu, or in downtown SF at lunchtime on a benefit show 40 years later - its the same total involvement, and aim at funkliness, every time out to hear just how intense, there's Mahavishnu in Vienna '75 - without doubt the craziest shit ever put to tape

Narada is a force of nature. And suddenly they were having some big fun! To be sure, I love pretty much all versions of WR, but I'd never heard this. This is like the "let's have a good time" version - love it! No, Kirk isn't Wayne, but he brought his own Houston-style funk to the proceedings, which worked great also!

@@Squirrelconga Michael Walden played on the album, tracks 1&2, Chester played on all other tracks, and became a member for some time. Weather Report had constant line up changes, probably due to Shorter and Zawinul having creative control over compositions. and the other musicians were merely side men. Same problem Mahavishnu had, and why Cobham left. McLaughlin had the final say over which songs went on the albums, and Cobham's material didn't get a look in. Time to start a solo career.

Coming from a guitarist---what made Weather Report unique was the lack of a guitarist. Your original 3 fusion super-groops (Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra & Return to Forever)---set the world of fire coming out of the gate---but Return & Mahavishnu HIT you with Connors, DiMeola & McLaughlin respectfully---but Wayne Shorter's sax came with blusey/jazz as opposed to searing jazz/rock guitar. Trust me---I loved all of the early days of fusion---but WR gave us an alternative
