In Episode 48 Part 3 A, Richard Solomon and Jackie Sonders will demonstrate how to build a trusting relationship between a mentor and mentee by participating in an activity called " A Get-Acquainted Activity for the Mentee and the Mentor". This Get Acquainted Activity includes a handout that contains ten sentence fragments, sentence stems, or conversation starters. The goal of this exercise is not to complete these sentence stems in the fastest possible time. In fact, it is just the opposite. It is designed to deepen the relationship between the mentee and the mentor teacher. Here's how it works; one person, let's call that person the mentor, begins the conversation by verbally completing the sentence stem in a few sentences, a paragraph, or a short story. After completing that sentence fragment, the listener, in this case the mentee, asks open and clarifying questions. They continue the dialogue to its logical conclusion. Then they reverse roles, the mentee completes the first sentence fragment, and the mentor asks the questions. The participants are then invited to move to stem number two, or any other one on the list of sentence starters. In fact, the mentee and the mentor can create their own sentence fragments. We should point out that this is not only a relationship building activity, but it is also designed to build trust between the mentee and the mentor. Accordingly, you will notice that each sentence stem is designed to be more challenging than the previous one. Thus, as one completes each sentence with honesty and integrity, it strengthens the trust between the participants. Incidentally, this type of get acquainted activity can be done numerous times during the mentee's internship. Here are the 10 sentence stems that the mentor and the mentee can articulate as they are building and strengthening their professional relationship.
1. I prefer to be called …
2. The reason I am here is …
3. To me the word mentee means …
4. To me the word mentor means …
5. As your mentor/mentee I expect you to…
6. Something I hope to gain from this relationship is …
7. One day I hope …

10. You are …
