The Canal Trust seems to be quick to issue ticket for overstaying, but not so quick to keep the Canal clear of derelict boats and trash.

@@cruisingontheborder Assuming that it appeared to be worth the trouble... The water could be pumped out with a drainage pump. One could try wrapping the boat with a sheet of plastic just above and below the waterline. Some duct tape would be required. You're hit the nail on the thumb: depending on the state of the hull and the engine. If I was ready to undertake that as a project, I'd love to have a go. Everything else would have to be torn out and replaced, of course. OTOH, if I was just thinking of a way to pick up a narrowboat cheap, then pass.

A decent winch and maybe a home made block with 12 falls on it and you could slowly drag that boat onto the bank, or high enough to patch the hole and pump her out, After that a quick inspect and she is good to go. Not a huge problem. In fact a 12 fall block and a decent capstan on the front of a four wheel drive would pull her out as long as you were anchored to the tree close to the capstan. The most important piece of gear is plenty of good rope, if you did it properly most of the water would leave the vessel as she slid up the bank, Its a very simple salvage, i have done a few of them. If i was a local the first job is speaking to the owner and then the insurance people. Please tell me exactly where she is.

I'm a carpenter so yes, I could do all the work. The only way I would take on the job is if the hull was good, the boat was free and it was stored at a place on the hard that didn't charge that much space rent and allowed me to do the work under a contract so that I wouldn't be kicked out for any reason unless I didn't pay my rent of course. The engines would have had to be not running at the time of the sinking in order for them to still be good. If the engines were running than the engines are gone.

Surely from a purchasers point of view, its cheaper to buy a sunken boat and refurbish than buy a build from new hull. With all the superstructure involved, its better to strip out and refit, than buying all that new steel, main problem tracking down who the actual owner is? Better to share working through locks as it halves the work, but saves water, which you didn't mention, naughty, naughty.
@cruisingontheborder

Hi Frank. Thanks for your comment. Like you say, with the current price of steel you’d think it would be cheaper to re float and refurb. We always try to share locks as you saw, and ad you say it does save water which jaq mentioned. It all helps keep the canal water levels in order. 👍❤️

About the sunken boat a lot depends on what the leak is. A pipe or hull penetration would be an easy fix. A hole in the hull would require a survey to gauge how extensive the rust/weakness was. A DIY man with welding skills could patch up and fair in a good lot of hull fairly cheaply.

Nice video, I live in Canada where i don't know of any narrow boats here, where i live in Manitoba we about 100k lakes and the boating season here is only 5 months max and then the cold winter sets in, i have relatives all over the UK and a great uncle who told my dad of days i think he said North or near Birmingham narrow boats being Drawn heavy horse teams moving coal or other raw material about 140 years ago, I would not reflect a boat with that much damage especially to the hull of it, your hull looked to be of steel of some sort, which will last and stand the test of time much better than wood will, and probably less hull maintenance with metal and the quality of coatings to go onto hulls nowadays are so much more corrosion resistance, to reflect and refit one of those boats must be a staggering amount of money, guessing 100k sterling, i know you'd save a ton of it doing the refit yourselves, it does basically become your floating home, houseboat so to speak, it is a very unique way to live and travel that not allot of countries have or can offer to people such as yourselves, much more so in the UK or Western Europe is my guess ,lots of history of canals, now its summer enjoy where the narrowboat takes you two 👍

Sunken steel hulls takes a long time to degrade ,steel rust slow when there is not mutch oxygen available. Especially in fresh water . Engines can often be saved if they are treated and cleaned fast after refloating . If the is reusable depends on prior condition and that hull is not totally destroyed prior to sinking that is . Eben burnt out steelboats can be often saved.

My first thought about worth it? was it would have to be totally gutted and rebuilt, or you would never get rid or prevent mold and mildew. Might be worth it if you could buy it cheap enough. Wouldnt the boat insurance cover the loss and make them responsble for clearing it? Or have they wriggled out of that? Nice video.

Hi David. ‘Ya gotta get in quick’ as the kids say! The most amusing part about the leek is that jaq didn’t realise there was a joke there when she filmed! Once I pointed it out she said ‘oh yes I see’ ! I give up! 👍❤️🤣🤣

To have such a project?!? I think 🤔 it will involve more legal paperwork over the wreckage ownership rather than building one of your own from scratch.

First boat a total scrapper , 2nd , maybe ? At what cost ? How much 2nd hand ? Get some inflatable bags underneath , pump out the water , get a decent patch on , to get to a shipyard . Last boat a real shame . Can only budget so much , getting out , got to shipyard , complete interior , back to bones . Then to fix what sank her ? Not my field of expertise , no welder . Just the logistics of getting the boat out , draining/ pumping / displacing water inside . Then just lift out onto a longbed trailer just waiting close ? No trees nearby ? And an easy route to the shipyard ? Frankly , would try the displacement route , with scuba gear . Or get really cheeky and as the Worlds Best ship recovery guy here in SA :-)

If people saw people talking things out of the boat while it was sinking then it can't be that bad to fix where the water was coming from.. so yes I believe it can be saved and given another life

Love boats and campervans, but almost impossible in this Country now that is safe to do either. Just returned from Northern Spain, (Atlantic side) parking by beaches and nature reserves, no problem/no fees. With water taps and showers on most beaches. But mostly no chavs or plebs, from Britain.

Is the bottom of narrow boat a thin layer of copper? The bridge operated by key and push button was interesting. Does flooding happen in the canals causing sinkage or lack of maintenance and slow leaks? Thank you for taking me through the picteresque canals of England. You going to watch the coranation of King Charles?
@johnshaw4140
Жыл бұрын
Not copper , the hull is generally made of steel , unless it's a very old boat in which case it would be a wooden construction
@cruisingontheborder
Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. There are many reasons they sink from poor maintenance to run off gulleys getting blocked. The bottom is usually steel as @JohnShaw says. Not sure if we will get to the Coronation but it would be great to do so👍❤️

Hi, Great content yet again and what a question. My heart would say yes to a project like that but my head would say stay away. Unfortunately it would all depend on costs for transportation, cranage and hard standing and whether it would be easier to buy a brand new bare shell.
