The beat is a reworking of Whodini’s “Friends”, and Lauren’s hook was originally from Kurtis Blow’s “If I Ruled The World”. Some of the most defining tracks of the 80’s.

This was his biggest radio song at the time. Was alot of people's introduction to Nas cuz you gotta realize Illmatic, for all its critical acclaim, wasn't a big commercial hit. The mainstream didnt catch on to Nas until It Was Written came out, this song in particular.

70s-80s-90s being birthed in those decades was an experience. I feel up until 1999, you were exposed to music and samples that dated back to 59, everything was cohesive across the genres. Hip hop, Rock, Urban Disco transitioning to R&B, my mom was the last child born to my grandparents in 1970, I popped up in the early 90s. While my later siblings ‘98, ‘00, and ‘07 they think it’s dated when my mom and I vibe to this and most 80s hip hop.

The Idea for this song comes from the 1980s song If I ruled the world by Kurtis Blow. Kurtis basically played out what the world would be like if he was king. Also your right Illmatic may be a better album but lowkey some of the best songs on It was written are better than some on Illmatic but Illmatic has no filler so it's a better project and is more culturally significant
