1400 light years away == the fastest spacecraft would take 25.8 million years to get there.
@Freezypeak
9 жыл бұрын
ominous450 Actually it would take less than 21 years to go there, for someone in the ship. "21 years" is actually is the time it would take to reach the center of the milky way (50,000 to 100'000 l.y. away) for an observer in a spaceship accelerating at 1 g then decellerating at mid point to its target at 1g again. This method is described by Carl Sagan in "Cosmos : Episode 8" at the 33 minutes mark. The full episode is available on KZitem.

***** "Suppose a spacecraft designed to accelerate at 1 g so we'd be comfortable aboard it. We'd go closer and closer to the speed of light until the midpoint of the journey. Then the spacecraft is turned around and we decelerate at 1 g to the destination. For most of the trip, the velocity would be close to the speed of light and time would slow down enormously. By how much? Barnard's Star could be reached by such a ship in eight years, ship time. The center of the Milky Way galaxy in 21 years. The Andromeda galaxy in 28 years. Of course, the people left behind on the Earth would see things somewhat differently.Instead of 21 years to the galaxy they would measure it as 30,000 years.When we got back very few of our friends would be around to greet us. In principle, such a journey mounting the decimal points closer and closer to the speed of light would even permit us to circumnavigate the known universe in 56 years, ship time. We would return tens of billions of years in the far future with the Earth a charred cinder and the sun dead." Carl SAGAN, Cosmos Episode 8: Travels in Time and Space, 1980

One way trip is possible in mere months below light speed. At 99.999999% the speed of light the journey would take 2 months and 12 day (and 5 hours) but for anyone staying on earth it would look like 1400 years. So round trip at that speed would take 3000 years for outside observers and 4-5 months for the crew.

What scientists _actually_ observed: A little blip in the dot of light from a very distant star. What scientists _assumed_: This is likely a planet that falls within the habitable zone What they media _reports_: NASA discovered an earth-like planet! This is a huge, important discovery! What the artist _renders_: A large planet with land and water that looks like something you'd see straight out of a sci-fi movie And a result, the scientists keep getting money to do more pointless research instead of practical things that would actually make a difference and accomplish something. Why are they not working on propulsion technology so we can go further out into space in less time? What about the possible future of asteroid mining? What about colonizing Mars?
@hkoizumi3134
9 жыл бұрын
greg77389 Pointless? I have no doubt people said likewise about Isaac Newtons work during his time when he studied the Haley's comet but yet he kick started the modern industrial age with his theory. Astronomy also gave further research to global warming by studying far planets.
@greg77389
9 жыл бұрын
H Koizumi How typical that you would try to bring Newton into this. Do you know what the difference was between Newton's work and this "joke" of a discovery? Newton was not only passionate in his work, he was also practical. He developed calculus, devised laws of motion and equations for motion and gravity and things that are actually useful, even today. He worked with things he could actually observe and get facts on and he didn't boast about things he knew nothing about. Though perhaps he did go a little far when he was convinced that light was made up of particles as opposed to waves, and almost the whole of the scientific community agreed with him simply because he such a high authority in the community (well deserved of course). And it took a younger scientist (I can't remember his name at the moment) to disagree and say "no, light is composed of waves!". Only when Einstein came along did he discover they were _both_ right. But I'm getting of topic now... The point is that science is more of a business today rather than the much more noble thing of discovery that it used to be. As long as scientists make it _look_ like they're discovering important things, they keep getting money, and then real discovery is seldom done. You have to understand that research costs money, and no one is going to pay them unless they make their work seem fruitful, even if it isn't. You have physicists who are almost religiously subscribing to theories like the Big Bang or that black holes exist and they expect people to buy into that wholeheartedly. It's a real eye-opener once you realize what's going on, or you can just be ignorant about it--it's a choice we all have the ability to make.

School's back in: The sun of those planets can be smaller and have those exoplanets closer to the sun and still have life because their sun can give approximate amount of energy that our sun is giving to the Earth if exoplanet is closer to the sun that is smaller than ours especially if their sun is red dwarf or those exoplanets are more distant from their suns than the Earth is from our sun if their sun is bigger. And the biggest way we could discover an intelligent life on exoplanets would be: How often can they be hit by the extinction level sized meteorites. How often life on those exoplanets can be ended especially by these types of meteorites if they don't receive a deadly big solar flare every once in a while. If the exoplanet is not receiving any deadly solar flare, is very rarely hit by extinction level sized meteorites (it has a gas giant behind them in orbit that protects them from these rocks), then they are 70-80% surely having life on them even if they aren't much in a goldilock zone since life can thrive without photosynthesis as we can see on organisms living in the depths of our oceans where the sunlight can't penetrate at all.

It's amazing to think that there may be life similar to humans on that planet, maybe the aliens live there and they were like us trying to find a similar planet like there's but they already reached us... Or that planet may be just like ours BUT older which means it's like going to the future

It would be cool if in the future, humans actually manage to get to that earth like planet and the future generations will have fieldtrips to earth and their teachers will say that "this is the planet humans (or whatever they might call us in the future) used to live in. Its withered so much that they had to transfer to *insert new planet name* and here we are now."

Every single species on this planet only evolved on this planet so they wouldn't be called humans. They would be called aliens or whatever they named their species as, But that doesn't mean they aren't like us, If they are as advanced as us they most likely have human like features like long arms, Long legs, Bipedal, Dexterous fingers, Forward facing eyes, and flat like feet like us and also eyebrow muscles that let you express more emotion. Which means they would have primate like animals on their planet which means there are mammal like animals there too

true as hell, cuz i mean, its very likely bc there's about 400,000,000,000 (400 billion) planets in our galaxy alone, and in the observable universe itself there's approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10 septillion) planets, so out of all those planets there's bound to be atleast 1 other planet with life like bruh, although the probability of them actually being anywhere close to as advanced as us is highly improbable in my opinion, i think life does exist on other planets but like micro organisms or sumn yk, or like animals like things like lil lizards and stuff,i dont rlly think they're as advanced as us

That reporter is not completely correct on everything he is saying, smaller planets than earth are bad for life not because they would end up spinning to fast ,but because when a planet is much smaller than earth it's gravity would be too weak to hold on to it's atmosphere, which would end up being blown away.
