In just 9 short years the 60's USA sent 3 fellas to the moon. 55 years later is clueless
@art.is.life.eternal
4 ай бұрын
In just those years, NASA (if you count Moon Launches in which they first sent a crew of 3 AROUND the moon, and back to Earth, and launches in which 3 men were sent to the moon to PRACTICE the detach-and-land procedures, but stopped just short of landing, to make sure all systems were functioning nominally [imagine how frustrating?!] and Apollo 13, in which they DID get to go around the moon - but only to sling them back to earth, because their Oxygen tanks blew up on the way to the moon, and took out half of their spacecraft - they barely made it back alive), and Apollo 11, 12, 14,15, 16, and 17 - all of which were successful in taking three men to the Moon, leaving one in orbit as overwatch and to handle the rejoining of the landing module with the return vehicle when the two astronauts who had landed on the surface were ready to return home, and sent two men to the surface, then a total of 51 astronauts were sent to the moon (either to orbit while the surface crew explored, or to land and explore first on foot only, and later with a Lunar Rover). I count - always - the third man who went, and orbited very low, straying in constant communication with the 2 surface crew, because that third man's presence in Lunar orbit was their guaranteed ticket to return to Earth - he was flying their Return Module, and maneuvered it so that when they left the Moon's surface, they could dock with him and the Return Module - which had the fuel they needed to get back to Earth. Without that third man (who got to see the Moon's surface close enough to watch them moving on the Regolith, and took many reels of photographs from close-up to the surface, as well as acting - sometimes - as a communications relay for the Lunar crew). Without the Third Man, no Apollo missions would have returned. We also brought back 842 pounds of lunar rock and soil for analysis. Much of this material is still being studied. It remains, by far, the most material brought back to Earth via manned collection, and will have that record for quite a while. We are hardly "clueless" - but if you didn't know this, in the 1960s, it was about beating the Soviets to the moon - so we gave NASA everything - literally - that it needed to achieve its goal, and had a total of over 400,000 people (yes, you read that correctly) working around the world, and around the clock, to make sure that these launches and returns were successful - and our national pride pushed them to get it done no matter what - and we did. Having accomplished that, Pres. Nixon canceled the manned space program - because for every one of those successful flights, NASA had to spend years custom -engineering each ship, and its capsules, and then custom-building every single one of the most expensive rockets ever built; and then, at the end of each mission, those incredibly expensive rockets - which were NOT built with reusability in mind - were at the bottom of the ocean, or abandoned in space. The public's attitude was, "We beat the Russians to the moon - now we can stop," " It's just too expensive," and "We have a war to fight in Vietnam - THAT’S where our money should be going." We should already have an orbiting Gateway Hub around the Moon, a large Moon base involved with coordinating Asteroid and Lunar mining, and a Mars colony with a million people working in it - at minimum. Too many people, though, lack the vision to pursue space as a destiny, not as a football game with a victor, a beginning, and an end. At the end of this "race to the moon," we made ourselves - our species - the "losers," by ending our efforts at the beginning. They didn't realize that building these spacecraft, and sending these men to our Moon - at a time when we were using A.C. current (making every system a potential death-trap), transistors, and no computers (the "computer room" was a large room filled with Black women with advanced Physics degrees and genius-level intelligence, working as "human computers," calculating trajectories, fuel consumption, gravity-assisted orbital "slingshot maneuvers" [to minimize fuel costs], orbital insertions, and everything electronic computers would do today. It was only much later that the first 'FORTRAN' driven computers were installed - but they were nowhere near as fast or accurate as the human "computers" they replaced), would be so dangerous and difficult. The Moon program should have awaited computers, VLSI chips, light (laser) communications, advanced materials' science, reusable ships (i.e. SpaceX), and a lot of other advances - but the fact that we did it in the 1060s and 70s, shows that there is never anything holding us back but our fears, and our carelessness. We lost 3 astronauts during a live firing test (on the ground!) of Apollo 1 because the engineers had decided to 1.) make the capsule door ONLY able to be opened from the inside with great difficulty, 2.) use a pure-oxygen environment in the capsule (it burned like a blast furnace), and 3.) made no plans to rescue them from the capsule if anything happened. Something happened - one of the a.c. powered systems shorted out, and sparked - which turned the capsule interior into a fiery execution chamber for all three men: Gus Grissom - the 2nd man to orbit the earth in a single-pilot capsule (picture of Grissom's spacesuit after the fire): www.astronomy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/02/gusgrissomsuit.jpg?w=620 Ed White, and Roger Chaffee - all fine men, and dedicated astronauts. Picture of the Apollo 1 capsule fire, after they could get into it: www.astronomy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/03/CharredApollo1capsule.jpg?resize=600%2C405 Video of tribute to all American astronauts who have died in training, or on missions: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qZ6lnoqYqHaDlXo Some believe there was only a monetary cost to the Space Program, but those who died in pursuit of it are proof otherwise - and the biggest reason to keep on reaching, or their sacrifices were wasted, along with all the other men and women who died moving our species closer to space. We aren't "clueless," but the unmanned space program has done a lot of preparation work for the men and women who will go to the moon and to Mars - we have mapped both bodies so precisely that navigating, landing, and setting up colonies will now be much easier. We know, now, the cost in deaths is high, and that space will always be hard - but our technology, since the 1960s, has advanced by leaps and bounds. The next Lunar landing will be made by a reusable ship, and we will be going to stay. Sorry this was so long.

In general, monopolies are bad. Usually, it's a case where a large company purchases smaller rising companies that are or soon will be competition. Much like what Boeing did when it purchased aerospace giant McDonald Douglas, However, that's not what's happened with SpaceX. Blue Origin, ULA, Boeing, and others are still out there competing with SpaceX. It's just SpaceX is outperforming them, by a large margin. That gives SpaceX enormous clientele potential.

Turnover is high throughout the industry as it is the only way to get a real pay increase. I have seen so many talented engineers, many my friends, come and go. Companies like Boeing try to make it difficult by using non-compete contracting, but the best engineers can squeeze in anywhere, and poatching is real. Although, it is getting real interesting lately. I have seen five senior, senior, engineers, because they were all old, retire since January. That is a whole lot. These were the guys who stayed and ran whole departments, they anchored the company at their level, determining design language and setting company standards that no one could question, and with their departing, thing might finally start to change.

Why would anyone trust a company that continues to fly planes that have manufacture defects. Boeing had its time and now its time to pass the torch to the next generation that can keep up.
