The Taylors on bass snd guitar and Tony Thompson banging drums with the impeccable Robert Palmer's vocals. Got this album when it came out in 1984, I was a junior in high school 16yrs old, drove my parents nuts with this album.

The drums use a technique called "gated reverb" in which the initial attack is turned WAY up, but the decay is massively accelerated so that the sound fades away very rapidly. This results in a HUGE initial BANG, followed by an almost instant fadeaway. The technique was developed by Phil Collins (who used it on "In the Air Tonight") and Peter Gabriel (who used it on "Intruder"). The technique faded away as the 80s did, but the "gated reverb" drum effect pretty much defined the pop and rock sound of the 1980s.

Their whole debut album was fire. Each band member absolutely killed it. Robert Palmer's soulful rock vocals, John Taylor's funky bass, Andy Taylor's heavy guitar riffs and Tony Thompson's intricate and booming drums. They named the band after a famous music recording studio in Manhattan where many artists have recorded including: Walter Becker, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Aerosmith, Baltimora, Chic, Counting Crows, The Clash, Kings of Leon, Marc Anthony, The B-52's, Tony Bennett, Michael Brecker, Devo, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Dream Theater, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Billy Joel, Grayson Hugh, Throwing Muses, Serge Gainsbourg, The Strokes, The Cribs, Bryan Adams, Bernadette Peters, Sister Sledge, Rocket from the Crypt, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett Trio, Neil Young, Jaco Pastorius, Harry Connick Jr., Iggy Pop, Madonna, Journey, Muse, George Michael, Betty Carter, Sum 41, John Mayer, Moby, Vanessa Williams, Blondie, Porcupine Tree, Michael Stanley, Joan Jett, David Bowie, The Last Shadow Puppets, The Rumble Strips, Trey Anastasio, Helix, Kadim Al Sahir, Gang Starr, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Weather Report, Jon Batiste, Vampire Weekend, Lady Gaga, and Roxy Music.

Although some may disagree, IMHO this T Rex cover is superior to the original. It is a shame this group could not have stayed together -- I think we would have had some more massive tunes to come.

Would be Tony Thompson on drums. Very few people hit the skins harder than Tony. That sound is his power, with heavy reverb, using a gate to capture only the initial hit and the big reverb, then it shuts off any of the natural ring of the drum.

I remember reading that Tony Thompson, Bernard Edwards (produced The Power Station) and Nile Rodgers played as a rock band before Chic but none of the labels would sign a Black rock band in the early 70's. I wonder if Some Like It Hot would have been close to how they sounded.

John Taylor the bassist here and of Duran Duran also had four solo albums in the 90s and he also had a short-lived band called Neurotic Outsiders who he also sang with as well as played bass. He formed a lot of bands and was hugely successful in his own right. His most recent collaboration is with a young artist called Merchant of whose album he produced and helped arrange as well as played bass on. He is very talented and is well respected in the music world. Just a little insight!

-Back in the 80s thunder drumbeats was the norm in r&b, r&r, urban contemporary jazz, heavy metal, house, rap, & even a lot of slowjamz had it. It could even make a sht song badass. That's why a lot of today's music that doesn't rock it like that now sound weak, even if the song is good.
