It kind of looks like when he fell he was trying to catch him self by holding the rope above the prusik knot which caused it not to grab. What happened with the top line? Did it break loose from the tree? Or did the prusik slip for some reason?

This is where adding a second lanyard and a Friction hitch of some sort attached to your center d would help a lot. I’m glad your ok. Looks like you were rushing to get down. Take your time and stay safe out there.

@@jbbolts he even says he had it in a dumb spot basically. His holding moved over his anchor so it was either on a bad branch or far out on a branch and slid in. “What the fuck ripped out up there.” Clearly he had a bad tie in

Technically this wasn’t a gaff out. When you descend you should never be using your gaffs, you should just lean back and let your rope do the work. HOWEVER, the fact your TIE-IN failed, not your gaffs, may mean your gaffs saved you from a moderate free fall. If you took the time to tie, in the future, don’t use your gaffs to descend a tree.

What do you think the old timers did before our modern rope systems were around. I’ll be it spurs are not my favorite thing to climb with but I’m good at going up and down the tree with them. The climber here would have ended up in the hospital or dead if he’d just rappelled down on the climbing line.
@briankennedy1313

@@Firebird_876 I don’t understand “rappelled down the climbing line”. I think ropes have been around for longer than you think, and any basic means of adding friction will allow for some control. And how absolutely simple a figure 8 is, I’m guessing someone could have imagined a similar device. The ages before ropes are also the ages before residential tree care. Since the point is to get work done, not just climb a tree and climb down it, we use ropes to position for WORK. On that account, I can’t imagine a situation where you wouldn’t have a rope to descend on. Since someone 300 years ago would have certainly ascended and descended with just some primitive spikes and no rope, then that’s obviously the best way to climb? You’ll just free fall otherwise? What??
@Firebird_876

@@briankennedy1313 the first means of getting into a tree or up a power pole were spurs, hooks, spikes, climbers or what ever you wanna call them. They came around in the 1860s when the telegraph industry started. I’m sure there were guys climbing on 3 strand ropes with a taught line hitch or an English prusik before any of the modern gear was invented. The figure 8 didn’t come out until the early 60s I believe. This climber would have free falled if he’d just came down on the rope because either the tie in broke or the base tie slipped up the tree.
