Of course! And why not? If you can't make a girl or woman smile you will never win her heart. This emphasizes the tragedy of Anakin's character even more. On one side he is the prophesized Choosen One who will bring ballance to the force and on whom the fate of an entire galaxy depends. And on the other side just ordinary stuff happens to him like a beautiful girl falls in love with him simply because he makes her smile and laugh - and this ordinary stuff that happens to many many ordinary people ultimatly creates an unsolvable internal emotional conflict in him that dooms the whole galaxy for at least two generations.

I love the way Queen’s Shadow expands on Padme’s character. It explains so many of the little details that people like to complain about with her in the prequels. You get to learn more about how things actually get done in the Galactic Senate - and Palpatine’s relationship with Padme and Naboo and how it all fit in his broader plans. It’s probably my favorite time period in all of Star Wars. I’m rambling, but I just really like the closer look we have at her life and what’s going on with the senate and the Senate in between Ep I & II. I feel like it kinda gets written off because it’s a young adult novel aimed at girls.

Plebs: "Gee, why would Padme ever fall for Anakin in AOTC?" Me, an educated Prequels enjoyer: Padme was a politician ever since she was a kid. Her entire conscious life she was treated as a politician first. She was either surrounded by people from the same social circle or by servants and others. Everyone around her carries themself, behaves and speaks in a very refined, deliberate - and insincere manner. Anakin was everything they weren't. He's very brash, he's not a smooth talker at all, but speaks from his heart, and he's a man of action rather than a man of words. Not to mention he's a damn handsome lad in AOTC. But first and foremost, he sees her as a woman first. He doesn't see her as a poltiician, he doesn't see her as a superior, doesn't see her as a means to a political end, he just wants her because she's her.

plus their ideologies (at least at the beginning were not that far off). Anakin wanted to be a Jedi so he could help people, And he thought the republic had become so political it was failing at that. Padme joined the senate for the same reason, and honestly thought the same as the republic (however she remained hopeful that she could help it become better). As you said, they both had restricted childhoods where they were taught the skill that they use most in life. They are both super protective over the ones that they love. They both prefer not fighting (but will resort to aggressive negoations when need be). It actually makes sense that they would fall for each other.

Gonna take a personal guess here: From Padme's point of view when she first met Anakin as a boy, he's probably the first person she met to talk about wild dreams, adventures, and exploration, something that she probably never had the luxury to give any consideration. Even more is that Anakin is talking about these things despite being well aware of his disposition as a slave. At that point, Padme's thoughts were probably something like, "If a boy in chains was able to dream about all these unreachable things, how come I can't do the same?" "Perhaps if I had him on my side,I can somehow find a life that wasn't possible for me before, and I get to show the parts of myself that I kept hidden all this time." Thus, Queen/Senator Amidala had the opportunity to temporarily relieve herself from the burden and just be Padme whenever she's with Anakin.

I don’t know about that. I think that Padme’s death would be the reason why Vader would say that he is unredeemable. Sure, all the Jedi that he helped destroy and the lives across the galaxy that he enslaved factor into it as well. But her murder was the one that completely shattered him. Anakin is still responsible for the woman he loved, because he chose the dark side. Talking about Luke’s mother would have been too painful. But maybe Obi-Wan and Vader will have some kind of confrontation in the future, where he tries to turn Anakin back to the light, and the writers use that to explain the statement away. We’ll see.

Anakin should have stabbed Palpatine when he had his back turned, after telling him he was the Sith Lord. There's nothing Palpatine could have done to save himself. And then confessed to the Jedi Council about murdering Dooku when he was disarmed (literally) and helpless. If Anakin/Vader had beaten and killed Obi-Wan on Mustafar, the big question is, would C3P0 and Artoo have brought the unconscious Padme on board the ship and taken off just before Anakin got back? The droids might have been able to take Padme to Senator Bail Organa by themselves, meaning she has the babies and then dies. Vader would be furious! Then Yoda might have taken Luke to Dagobah with him, instead of leaving Luke on Tatooine with no Obi-Wan to protect him. Luke would have been trained as a Jedi from a very young age indeed, he would be totally different from the Luke we know. He'd have long hair and a beard, dressed in rags and barefoot, and have Yoda's manner of speaking! "True, that is not! Impossible, that is!" 😄

@@timonsolus If Anakin killed Palpatine at that point, there would be no Order 66 given. Now, you have to ask yourself, was being a Sith lord even illegal in the galaxy, and would that "crime" have been enough to satisfy a war weary population as to why one of Palpatine's closest Jedi friends would murder him? Would Anakin have been publicly charged with assassination of the Chancellor? (Ironic if Mace Windu demanded his arrest for it) Could the dying Palpatine's spirit have possessed Anakin? Many different paths that future could have taken... all great material for Alternate Realities stories. :)

In the book "The Art of Seduction" one of the ways to get someone to fall in love with you is display that you yourself are completely, head over heels, unabashedly in love with them. That sort of attention, and admiration is intoxicating and very attractive if you yourself are attractive. Anakin is obviously attractive, it was a short fall for Padme to just say fuck it, and allow herself to love him since he already loved her. Anakin may not have been a perfect soul-mate match for her, but it doesn't matter. His love seduced her, and she fell whole heartedly.

I am not a prequel hater by any means, I am a fan of them overall, but I honestly believe they could have made an entire trilogy out of just what took place in Episode III. Some parts of it felt rushed big time. But it's still a great movie, there was just lots of room to fill in more - as we are now seeing - but the movie would have been 5 hours long.

It always annoys me when people think Padme liked Anakin romantically in the first movie, because she didn't. They were just friends, and she liked him (platonically) because she could be herself around him, she didn't have to act like a queen. That only developed into romantic feelings after they were both adults and much more mature, and I really don't get why people think the 14 year old queen of Naboo would have a crush on 9 year old Anakin the reckless pod racer.

Important detail. In The Phantom Menace Queen Amidala NEVER smiles except when looking at Anakin in the final scene. Nonetheless, it is not well narrated how she reminds this when being alone with that grown-up Anakin assigned to her as a handsome bodyguard. There are missing details. Specially concerning how Padmé still felt that after knowing about Anakin's first genocide. I think it would have been better to omit women and children from it. You know, more Leon's than Vader's style. At least at that time of the plot.

Amidala fell in love with Anakin because we could bring out Padme, the girl, the woman, the person, rather than Amidala the Queen, the Senator, and the Rebel. Then in the end it was their son that shined the light of truth on her last words, her final plea to Obi Wan.... “Don’t give up on him, Obi-Wan, There is still good in him.
