Not to take anything away from his years of training, dedication and the blood, sweat and tears but, at parts it seems like he is what skaters called "rinking around" between jumps and spins. The pressure had to be high on the scale. Imagine that. Extremely talented.

Yeah, he was so young back then and he admitted that the pressure got to him. As tragic as it was at the time though, it was also a good learning experience for him. He became the champion he is today because of his initial failures. He says that you learn more from your failures than you do from your wins, and he has really learned to manage and to better handle pressure since PyeongChang. He's so mentally tough and dominant now. It's amazing how he went from this performance in PyeongChang to now being so chill and relaxed, even during the toughest moments in competitions. His story is so inspirational.

I heard he was the favorite to win here as yuzu was post injured hmmm.. No chen in the podium though... usa media undermined yuzuru...now what!!!
Honestly, a lot of the comments here are really disturbing. You're not fans when you celebrate one athlete having an unfortunate performance just because he's a major competitor of someone you like (I'm looking at all you Yuzuru fan-girls). As skating fans, we should wish that all the athletes to have their best performance and that the best of the best is honored with the victory. Stop saying Nathan is/was overrated, the media is to blame, or Hanyu is perfect. Wish them both the best because they are amazing skaters and we are fortunate to get to see them.

I think the pressure kind of choked Nathan. It's not so much his artistry that was the problem, it's the same as previous competitions. It's his jumps that got him this far, once he loses confidence in that, he's cased. Yes, he was overhyped, but it really was a strong case that he would win here, it just didn't happen.
@SanaSamaha

It got me thinking, if Nathan had cleanly landed at least one of his jumps, he could have gotten a medal. If he landed all of them, he could have gotten gold. He might have been over-hyped, but the hype was real. And it's just unfortunate for him.

Yuzu in this age seldom had a foot wrong... too much expectations from this guy .. too pressured... so stiff and poor choreo... he needs an Olympian coach as Yuzu and javi have and to have a great choreographer .... my thoughts only ...
@Goononymous

Shae-Lynn has actually choreographed this beautiful programme for Nathan...but as the season progressed, Nathan has given up the beautiful transitions and footwork in between the big jumps in order to maximise his base values (I'd rather call him a BVer instead of a jumper since he couldn't actually jump nicely. sorry!). It can kinda work, if he landed them without falling (e.g. 2018 Worlds, still almost no speed after landing). If he could not land cleanly, the programme ended up a disaster like this performance at the Olympics, because there's no more substance left. Ironically, Nathan asked Shae-Lynn to choreograph because he appreciated the programmes she made for Yuzuru and other skaters. But at the end of the day, Nathan has made a choice - to go for BV and jumps and sacrifice artistry. More annoyingly, the judges rewarded him by inflating his GOE and PCS.

It's not even about the falls or the jump fails, the way he skates, in general, is just ungraceful and inelegant. He's gliding across the ice rigidly just to make a jump, it's like all he can focus on is the jumps and nothing else is added into his skating. He literally glides half the rink without any step sequences to prepare for a jump, that's unbelievable. This isn't even figure skating anymore if he doesn't care much about the performance elements that are essential within the sport. I've seen a lot of his performances at his top condition, and yes he lands jumps with lots of spins, but his whole demeanor is just rigidity

Hanyu is a two time Olympic champion and he's the only man to do it consecutively. He has also broken several world records. There's a compilation video of it. Of course he has many fans. But Nathan's failure here has nothing to do with Hanyu and everything to do with the crazy expectations on him and his inexperience.

American media over-hyped Nathan and totally underestimated injured Yuzu. In reality, not only did Yuzu come back strong, but also he came back with a whole surreal level - he's this out-worldly perfection between beauty and athleticism. There's something serene and calm about him, yet he pours his heart out to the ice with so much passion. There's a reason why he's a two-time Oly champion. While Nathan may be able to land all the quads but lacks quality, grace and emotion. I think this was a good leaning experience for Nathan for future progress.

The people in these comment sections trashing Nathan and calling him "overhyped" are wrong. He wasn't over-hyped. Even if his skating wasn't polished at the time and he hadn't yet grasped his artistry and style, he still had a serious chance at gold because of the difficulty of his programs. Unfortunately, he was young and the pressure was too great for such an inexperienced skater and, so, his nerves broke down. Nathan took his failures and learned from them though. Nobody is as cool and collected under pressure as he has been since the Olympics in PyeongChang. And nobody has been as dominant since. The gold medal will be Nathan's to lose in Beijing. All the other skaters are going to have to skate their hearts out in order to have a chance against this three-time reigning world champ.
