The Nathan P7X. An experimental 7 chime train horn first created by Edward Kaspriske and Elwood Belknap. I fell in love with Ed’s P7 at the Horseshoe Curve Horn Honks and it’s always been a dream of mine to be able to recreate that. This was no easy task as parts continue to be harder (and more expensive) to find. I didn’t want to Copy Ed’s. I wanted it to look unique in its own way. I decided to use and L manifold Instead of a Gullwing. This posed its own challenges as the standard oldcast 3 piece manifold chunks or “wings” are not long enough so I had to chop up another low mount P manifold so they would be tall enough to clear the bells. Then came the next challenge, the 2 modified bells. The 3 bell needed to be re tuned as well as the second 5 bell. The great Michael Muha already made a post about this so I won’t go into detail but this project wouldn’t have been possible without him and his incredible work! This horn uses all old cast bells except the 2 modified bells which were Newcast to save on modifying older bells that are already hard to find. Also on a odd note, the zero bell is an oval inlet with a cast zero AND a ghost 0. Very cool!
At the end of the day, I wanted this horn to be as perfect as possible. I wanted to make a horn that Ed would have been proud of, and I hope I was able to do just that. Also, a huge thanks to Mike Mullins for providing some information and insight on this horn as well as selling some parts from his collection to make this project possible!
