It’s sad that some people can’t seem to appreciate a brilliant performance without comparing negatively to their own favourite. Lea Salonga will always be one of the greats, but she’s hardly going to come back to the role is she?! So let’s appreciate someone new. Nathania Ong has delivered a remarkable acting performance here, yes at the expense of technical vocal perfection, in places, but in musical theatre that’s fine. Her voice is delivering every emotion - desperation, anger, misery. Her use of vibrato means she even *sounds* like she’s walking through the rain! Numerous West End performers have singled out this performance for praise, and rightly so. I hope she’ll go far.

i dont think think the people here are considering the impact of her live performance. i saw les mis with her as eponine recently and there was not a single dry eye in the audience when she sang this. the vibrato helps to add to the emotion and i believe that in this particular situation she was nervous because that is a LARGE audience. les mis is her second west end show EVER and she comes from a country where theatre is not so prominent (i live in this country) and i am honestly so immensely proud of her after watching it. her shows up until now have had relatively small audiences in comparison so id imagine the nerves contributed to her vibrate but it still sounded AMAZING. actors should not be judged over just one performance.

Perhaps she will inspire Singapore just like Lea inspired the Philippines… truly amazing performance.

As a former university literature professor, I know for a fact that Eponine (Les Miserables) has roughness in character - far from being sweet & gentle. Eponine is a wretched creature who helps her parents steal, but she's eventually redeemed by love for Marius. She proves that no one is beyond redemption, and she ultimately emerges as one of the novel's most tragic & heroic figures. She is fatally wounded, climbs the barricade and dies in Marius' arms, as he weeps and tells her of her deep love and admiration ("A Little Fall of Rain). We know so well that in the book, Eponine starts out as a bad person, who has to work her way up to goodness. However, in the musical, Eponine starts out as a good person in bad circumstances, who doesn't really have to work her way up to anything. It's stated in the book that she's a heavy drinker, and that this has taken a toll on her voice and appearance. She's a brash, sometimes an abrasive young criminal who thinks nothing of all kinds of petty crime but she's also capable of kindness and goodness despite the difficult life she's led. Unfortunately, a lot of Eponine's harsher edges are omitted in the musical, which I think lessens the impact of this part of her personality. Now, creative interpretations are not linear, they're multidimensional. I believe this young Singaporean - Nathania Ong's interpretation of the iconic song ,"On My Own," epitomizes the veracity of the narratives. We have our own biases but truth after all is beyond vocals, notes, and tonality. #WorldPeace🌿🥰 As a Filipino, I'm proud of Leah's performance. However, I personally and professionally give my academic nod to this young Singaporean lass.👏🌹👏🇵🇭💐❤️💛💙🌹#NoOffense🙏 (There's a viral video going on comparing Ong's so called "ranting style" interpretation of "On My Own" versus L. Salonga's reflective and sweet take on the song. You may watch it; Ong got a standing ovation in London to the dismay or maybe "jealousy" of some loyal fans of LS.) Hahaha 🤗🌿🤣

The rawness of this performance packed with imperfections, as all performances are, made this musical so beautiful. It implored so much emotions for the viewers to witness. I think all musicals should evolve to perfect portraying emotions, may this perfection be by means of obvious imperfections because it just makes the performance so humanly and relatable. This made me tear up.
