@@bootybongrips8047 we had Tyler Adams in there cleaning up and clamping down on the Mexican midfield. He’s not there so our defenders will get exposed with a high press which Mexico will employ if they know the guys in the back can’t make a quick accurate pass. Wes will have to drop deep along with Musah to progress the ball. It’s time consuming knowing those two guys could be more effective playing higher up the field. If you’re talking about defending I rather have Miles who is quick and Richards (left footer) who can move the ball like Ream.

The US needs better defenders lets not sugar coat it theyre not good at all. They were exposed against a really bad form netherlands who was not elite like in 2010 or 2014. They were very sloppy and give tge ball away and can't pass well. Defenders are badly needed in the US. Defenders are key to beating elite nations. We focus too much on fowards like balogun which is exciting but we wont be able to stop goals from coming in against elite teams if we keep all those Defenders.

All of the errors against the Dutch were mental errors. Not tracking players. I personally think exhaustion had something to do with it but that can’t be a full excuse. Mental errors not skill errors. Our defenders are fine, neither CB was to blame for any of the goals against us the Netherlands. Adams didn’t track back to depay and then dest and Jedi didn’t mark blind and dumfries

I'm not a John Brooks fan, but I will say this. When he first got on the field for Hoffenheim he was every bit as terrible as I predicted he would be, being personally responsible for letting in like 10 balls over 4 games and looking like he didn't even deserve to be in the MLS. I predicted at the time that he'd be the cause of Hoffenheim getting relegated, and he did indeed get benched for a few games for Hoffenheim. But, to be entirely fair, he's steadily improved as he has gotten minutes and after he got benched. He's played well for Hoffenheim and with him playing well, Hoffenheim dug its way out of the relegation zone. So while I don't count him in the top 6 CB's when we have CB's healthy, he has managed to get back on my depth chart at least.

Let me start by saying that I really like Matt Turner, but at some point, we have to consider or test Ethan Horvath as the USMNT #1. The fact is that Horvath was instrumental in helping Luton Town get to the EPL and achieve soccer history - most Americans don't understand what a big deal it is for Luton Town to get to the EPL - and Ethan Horvath was a huge part of that. He also has always stepped up when playing for the USMNT - remember that he was a big reason the USMNT beat Mexico in the last Nation League finale. Also, Matt Turner is NOT playing! I get that he plays for Arsenal, but he's just riding the bench right now. So the question is do you want a bench warmer as your #1 keeper? Or do you want a guy who is a regular starter and just achieved soccer history?... I say let Matt Turner start National League semi-final against Mexico, and then let Ethan Horvath start ALL the Gold Cup games. I think this would be really good for the USMNT program.

Luca de la Torre is basically a carbon copy of Yunus Musah. Seriously, look at their La Liga stats. They both are amazing at carrying the ball up the field, they both struggle in the final 3rd. Musah is better at long balls and defense, de la Torre is better at short passes and combination play. It's going to be hard for de la Torre to find time with Musah being a mainstay.

Let's be frank; we were never as good as so many of the fans wanted to believe we were. This notion that we were a golden generation of players that could play with anyone and we just needed a European coach to be a serious WC contender just needs to die a death, and everyone who was pushing that just needs to be so discredited that they aren't able to comment on anything serious ever again. The notion was based on the idea that merely being in the academy of one of the top teams or getting some minutes for them was proof that they were all going to become stars at top teams, and that was never a realistic perspective nor did that perspective show a lot of understanding of the size of the rosters of the big teams and how few of those players ever pan out. The truth is that NONE of our players actually worked out. Weah dropped out of PSV, then was benched by Lille and never became a star. Pulisic was nearly a bust at Dortmund and was a bust at Chelsea. Dest dropped out of Barca, was sent to Milan and didn't even really see the field. Richards was dropped by Bayern, then got sent to Palace and was frequently injured and was only average when he was on the field. Pepe went to Germany and immediately failed. Renya has played and whined himself into a limited role for Dortmund, and while his talent is still there at this point you have to wonder if the Primadonna kid will ever grow up into a man. McKennie became and experiment at Juventus until he wasn't, and then went to the EPL and stank it up. Matthew Hoppe has failed to make an impression at any team that is above MLS level. Josh Sargent has proved he's a competent Championship level striker, but that's it - proving my claim that he was a Gyasi Zardes level talent right down to the distinctive hair (I mean seriously, they play so much alike). All the talk that we'd have a bunch of starters on Champions League level teams just never panned out. But, this is a heck of a better situation than we had from 2015-2018. And it's not like we could have a worse coach than the German clown.

I definitely agree with the lack of understanding about the size of rosters at top clubs. I was kicking around the idea of making a video about that. There seems to be a fundamental lack of understanding about the amount of players that come through the big clubs and how rare it is that players stick around long enough to be regulars for 4 or 5 seasons, yet we base our expectation of performance of players at those clubs on those rare players who do make it to that level. Meanwhile, there's a mountain of names of players who come in and out of these clubs. Especially now that the market for top end talent has gotten so outrageous, big clubs are willing to take fliers on young players to see what they can do. It makes more sense to invest $5-10 mil on 10 prospects than it does to invest $100 mill in one guy. B/c $100 mil guys still flop. So many paradigms in world soccer are shifting yet fans seems to be stuck in 2010. It ain't 2010 anymore.

@Matthew Reynolds. Some points I will agree with you but this did have the potential to be the Golden Generation but they have been robbed of that at this point. That does not mean that they still can't accomplish that. Our true Golden Generation will be that group of players from about 13-18 year olds right now.. All I have heard for years is how more of our players need to go Europe but Europe has been the death of pretty much every American and it is NOT because of skill. Pulisic, Reyna, Musah, Weah, Dest etc are better than most of the players in their leagues, definitely in the top 50%. There is ZERO reason those guys should not be playing massive minutes. Some of that is the decision to go to the teams they are on but the anti American soccer culture is massive in Europe especially in the UK and especially Spain. Don't get me wrong there are teams like Fulham that have been good to American players. All you have to do is look at Leeds. And I know this doesn't apply to all Leeds fans but I watched a ton of coverage and while several of their youtubers were very supportive. as soon as anything went wrong it was those damn Americans. Just watch coverage, an American player and English player can do the exact same bad things and the American is trash and they don't even mention the English guy. Bamford should have been gone early on. As for this lineup. What do we do if we lose? There really isn't anyone better. This is a horrible matchup with Mexico, we are the much better team but almost no one is in form which is one reason why I would start LDLT instead of Musah.
