The song gained great popularity during the French Revolution, especially among army units in Marseille, becoming known as La Marseillaise.
Its title was originally War Song for the Army of the Rhine. The anthem was composed by Rouget de Lisle, a French army officer and self-taught musician, at the request of the mayor of Strasbourg, Philippe-Frédéric de Dietrich, days after the declaration of war on the Austrian Emperor on 25 April 1792. it should be a stimulus to encourage soldiers in border combat in the Rhine River region.
The song was an immediate success and soon, through travelers, reached Provence, in the south-east of France. A month later, the song arrived in Paris with the federated soldiers from Marseilles, who sang it throughout the journey. Since then, it has been associated with the city of Marseille. On August 4, the newspaper La Chronique de Paris evoked the chant of the Marseilles, and six days later it would be sung during the famous takeover of the Tuileries Palace.
