Good information. A few things I’d add. It is not one weekend a month, two weeks a year. Like you said, that is the MINIMUM. Depending on your unit there can be more. In the infantry that is the case. There are 3-week training rotations, there are 4-week rotations at JRTC or NTC. If you are deploying there will be additional training on top of the basic requirements. There are required schools to go to for promotions. And sometimes those weekends are 3-4 days. I’ve done a 9-day drill before too. Oh, deployments. You can deploy. Some people hear “National Guard” and think we literally guard the nation here. No. I have deployed in the Guard. People signing up need to remember that while we all have our reasons for joining, ultimately you are joining a fighting force that is to train and be ready to win in combat. Doesn’t matter if you’re a cook or Special Forces. You are becoming a Soldier whose job it is to deploy at some point. If you don’t want to deploy, don’t join. The Global War on Terror might be over (on paper), but the next conflict is coming. If you become an officer or move up the ranks as an NCO, there will be things outside of drill weekends you will have to do. It simply can’t be done all in a weekend or by the full time unit staff. This was an adjustment for me. Part of it though. “Leadership is the responsibility to do more, not a privilege to do less.” Someone smarter than me said that and it’s true. I have just over 9 years in the Guard.

To add to the deployment thing, 46% of all deployments were National Guard, out of all the branches. Also while I was in the 34th ID, I learned the National Guard was the first into Europe during WWII, half a year before the Marines even started Island hopping. The 34th was in Ireland in January, before continuing to run the campaign in Africa right after everyone else showed up to invade. The National Guard has been involved in every conflict, and was the very first branch of the military.

All the older guys in my unit seem to enjoy our drill weekends and everything. You'll go to basic and AIT, same as everyone else, then come home to do your MDAY thing. I went to AIT with a 34 year old former marine, and another 36 year old (no prior service). These guys were probably the favorite dudes in our class. Of course, being in your 30's in a barracks full of people fresh out of highschool has it's many downsides, but overall, they both said they had fun. Long as you treat everyone respectfully and aren't a total d-bag you'll fit in just fine. Though the drills will probably throw some old guy jokes at you since you're likely older than all of them.

As far as what you mentioned, you'll get a little extra cash each drill (I believe) in the form of basic housing allowance. Some for housing costs, some because you have dependants. As far as work civilian side, you can't be fired because of military obligations. As far as making a career out of the guard, there are full-time opportunities with the guard itself but depending on what MOS you are, it may be better to become what's called a fed-tech. These are the civilian guys who are paid by the govt to come work on base. In my case, I am a 15G (Sheet metal/Airframe repairer) in the guard. The army pays us for the work, but pays the civilians more. This is all stuff you can talk about once you're at your unit. As far as drill weekends go, it's almost always super laid back, not really what you'd get in the big army. And everyone I've met had been exceedingly easy to talk to, even for a guy like me who struggles with communication.

Nice video-good job! One thing to add, as a former commander of a Army Guard Maintenance Company, you have a reasonable to good chance you will deploy on active duty for up to a year or more, and you might not be performing the MOS you trained for. My unit deployed to Iraq for a year as a general support maintenance company, and we did not turn a wrench for the entire year. We did force protection the whole time. It was a very difficult experience for our soldiers who had different expectations of what the Guard was all about. There is much more than state missions and the minimum time requirements. Keep up the good informative work!

Good information. Wanted to share information regarding the weekend drill topic. A weekend drill for national guard is not necessarily only 2 days a month. There are months where you drill 2-3 days a month Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Some days you will have long days, and sometimes you will not be able to go home that weekend and will have to stay in the barracks depending if the battalion is there or not. Speaking from experience, my past drill weekend I wasn’t allowed to go home and we drilled the 3 days from 7am until 6-8pm each day. So be prepared for long days don’t expect it to be a breeze as long as you go in with that mindset you’ll be good.

Anyone seeking to join the Guard should first talk to a prior service Guardsman or Guardwoman especially one involuntarialy separated due to the Covid-19 Policy. Under the current situation globally and domestically as a Prior Service Guardsman I would not advise a young adult in their Junior Year of High School or a High School Graduate to enlist in the National Guard Army or Air of their home state. Now if their State has a separate State Guard, State Military Reserve or State Militia from the National Guard, yes join that, not the Federal Armed forces at all.

There’s a few key differences between the Guard and Reserves. 1. Guard units are part of the state, Reserve units are not. A governor can call up units in their state for disaster or civil unrest response. Reserves are a federal asset only. 2. Reserves do not have combat arms such as infantry, armor, cav scouts, field artillery, Special Forces, etc. National Guard has all of that, although your state may not have it. For instance, in Alabama there are no cav scout or armor units. There are infantry, artillery, and Special Forces though. Just depends on what you want to do, what’s in your state, and how far you are willing to travel on a monthly basis for training.

I have an 18-year-old son who is in his senior year of high school. Despite being accepted to many colleges, he decided to join the national guard. For an honor student, what would you recommend?
@oshdallas
Жыл бұрын
He can still go to college and be in the national guard. I did a video on this called SMP program. I personally think if it’s something your son wants to do then I would recommend. I completely understand feeling hesitant and everyone is different in there situation. The national guard is a fine balance of military and civilian life. This is also a good stepping stone if your son wants to make it a fulltime career or go back to normal civilian life. He will still sign a contract however he will be at home most of the time.
@DevilFrog61
Жыл бұрын
Just because he wants to serve a few years doesn’t mean he can’t go be a hot shot academic, business man, etc. afterwards. I got my degree, and then enlisted, and I’ll be a civilian again soon in my mid 20s with leadership confidence and real world experience my peers don’t have. Some young men (the only ones who are worth a damn) have an internal sense of duty to serve and do their part to the society we live in. That is honorable. If you don’t respect that in your son you’re wrong for that. Let him do his time like he wants to, become the good man that he is destined to be, and it doesn’t take away from your civilian life it makes you a BETTER civilian when you’re out because you gain experiences like no other. Be PROUD your boy wants to be an actual man and step up honorably to do his part, even if just for a few years. Good luck to him. God bless America and the few good men who truly uphold the reputation, like your son.

No basic training is not the same. Even in the Army there is different basic training depending on your mos. For example infantry held at fort benning vs Jackson.

My best friend was army national guard, no it’s not hard bro. I was in ROTC and had to PT every day at 5am, do weekend things, etc. my natty guard friend only had to leave for one weekend a month! And he was getting PAID and I wasn’t! Too easy bro. You got it, serve our great country. Best of luck to you brotha

I did both after serving on Active Duty and a year long OEF combat Deployment (11B) You should totally try it! That being said, it is totally doable in every sense of the word. You will learn time management which is an extremely important skill to learn for both civilian/Military careers. Step up and serve your country man. It will put you waaaaay ahead of you’re civilian peers. Like it’s actually not even fucking funny. How bad do you want it?!

Are you considered a Veteran like the Army? Ive been told the National guard is not considered the military- they get none of the VA benefits
@oshdallas
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely considered a veteran, a lot of people are misinformed. Even have it on my drivers liscense. What I can say generally speaking once you have completed basic training and 180 Days after arriving to your unit you are now considered a veteran apon the VA regardless what branch, regardless active or reserve. However after doing some research this is showing that this is prior to 2016 so laws may change.
