Near the city of Minden on the Weser is the PORTA WESTFALICA, the breakthrough of the Weser between the Wiehengebirge and the Wesergebirge. At this "Gateway to Westphalia" stands the 88 meter high national monument "Kaiser Wilhelm Monument at the Porta Westfalica" from 1886 on a ridge. The monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was designed by Kyffhäuser builder Bruno Schmitz. At the foot of the ridge is the former "Hotel Kaiserhof". Formerly a first class house, it is now empty after a fire.
