my notes: Natural rights: rights (life, liberty, property) given to people by God (not gov.) Social contract: power to rule is in the hands of the people, people willingly give over some of that power to the gov. who protects their natural rights People start to believe governments ought to protect their rights, and governments ought to run by democratic processes, and governments ought to be constitutional in nature. First took hold in British colonies of North America Happened bc colonies independent from Britian Ocean apart and colonies had no representation in British Parliament but gov. levy taxes on them July 4, 1776, declare independence and become United States of America Declaration of Independence (written by Thomas Jefferson) inspired by Locke’s thinking (natural rights, social contract) French Revolution (inspired by American Revolution) 1780s France was deep in economic woes, mainly caused by war spending to solve that problem King Louis XVI called in 1789 a meeting of the Estates-General (official body that represented the three estates of the French population, namely, the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners) third estate represented like 98% of the population, they still had an equal vote with the other two estates, the clergy and the nobility, which only represented about 2% of the population. (Knew it was unfair) result the Third Estate broke away and formed their own representative body called National Assembly. Louis XVI heard about it, he threatened to arrest the leaders of the National Assembly. in response to that, on July 14th, 1789, an angry crowd stormed the Bastille (prison) that in the eyes of the people symbolized monarchical abuse and the corruption of the aristocracy spread throughout France inciting peasants from all over to rise up against their nobles Louis XVI was forced to accept a new governmental arrangement that gave significant voice to the National Assembly. New doc made called Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, and it was deeply influenced by the American Declaration of Independence and included protections of basic human rights and provided for a limited monarchy (Louis the 16th fought againsted it, causing the Rein of Terror which ended w beheading of the king) Haitian Revolution (French colony) Population made up of two dif groups (few French plantation owners, and then a huge population of enslaved Africans who were working for the plantation owners) enslaved population of Haiti rose up in revolution against their masters and killed many of them and burned their houses as well (inspired by French Revolution) 1791 a Haitian named Toussaint L’ouverture took charge and led the rebellion against the French enslavers (surprising victory and establish independent Haitian gov. *similar to American Revolution) first successful revolution of enslaved people and the first black-led independent nation in the Western Hemisphere New Zealand Wars British annexed New Zealand in 1840 and established dominance over the natives, which were known as the Maori (did not like being ruled by foreign whites) Maori tribes joined together in order to fight against the British and expel them from their land, by 1872, the British had crushed the rebellion and clamped down even tighter on the Maori Latin America Creoles thought abt revolting creoles were discontent for a few reasons First many creoles were extraordinarily wealthy because of their agricultural pursuits, but bc of the mercantilist policies of Spain, they were losing a huge chunk of their profits Second the creoles bc often passed over for positions of authority, which were summarily reserved for peninsulares under the leadership of Simon Bolivar, the creoles rose up against Spain He was extraordinarily successful and gained a huge chunk of territory that he called Gran Columbia. Movement w doc outlined values impacted by enlightenment thought Bolivar’s Letter from Jamaica, he argued for the necessity of constitutional republics, of natural rights, and for democratic ideals in the governing of the people of Latin America Nationalism: force that binds people together who share the same ethnic identity and language Core of all these revolutions Italian Unification since the fall of Rome many centuries before, the Italian peninsula had been divided into independent and competing states in 1848 the prime minister of one of those states by the name of Count Cavor led the charge to unify Italy under his house: the House of Savoy his house was the only native Italian dynasty, it only made sense to him that the entire nation ought to be united under his rule through strategic alliances and battles he was able to unite Italy German Unification 1848 the Prussian leader Otto von Bismarck engineered three wars that united the German people in spirit against the enemy in 1871 he united them in a nation when he founded the new unified German empire.

I'm sure this video is great for people taking AP history but the part about the Italian unification is just straight up wrong. While the count of Cavour was the PM of Sardinia, he didn't come from the house of Savoy, that was the king, Victor Emmanuel II. he was a great statesman and did manage to gain allies, most importantly France in 1859, but Italy wasn't unified under Cavour's rule because he was Prime Minister, not King. Most importantly, Cavour didn't unify Italy through a series of wars. While under his office, Sardinia did see a joint victory with France against Austria which brought Lombardy into the kingdom of Sardinia in 1859 but this was hardly the unification of Italy. Italy was unified by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860-61 when, while he did have the political support of Cavour, he conquered the Two Sicilies with an army of volunteers, not with the Sardinian army or with any serious help from the Sardinian state. Garibaldi then met up with king Victor Emmanuel and handed over the South of Italy to the king, creating the Kingdom of Italy. While Cavour was undoubtedly important, this is overplaying his importance while also straight up just not having the correct information

Good question! In the official curriculum there are required concepts and then optional illustrative evidence. If it’s required then it’s in the video. However, the curriculum usually offers 3-4 illustrative examples, and sometimes I cover them all, sometimes I don’t. None of them are required but they’re good for evidence in essays...

I love your videos so much. My teacher’s notes and styles of teaching is extremely tedious, and I’ve always gotten 70-80s on the unit tests. Decided to take action and take my own notes with the help of your videos that have helped me understand and retain the material much more better. Made a 96 on the unit 5 test !!!

It’s hard to hear you go through both the American And Haitian Revolutions in the context of the Enlightenment and even read the the lofty rhetoric that starts the Declaration of Independence without mention of slavery in the United Stated of America. I know this is a breathless summary but there has got to be more to know.

I couldn’t watch this video on my school laptop for an assignment because its considered inappropriate by my school for absolutely no reason beyond “woke censorship” most likely. Banning educational content is bad especially when I had to use my phone to watch it.
