The evolution of modern India is a unique offering to the historical, socio-political and psychological study of nationhood. Saket Suman’s enlightening book, The Psychology of a Patriot, presents a thought-provoking chronicle of India. Makarand R. Paranjape’s upcoming books are JNU: Nationalism and India’s Uncivil War. Gurmehar Kaur’s most recent work, The Young and the Restless: Youth and Politics in India, explores the electoral and ideological involvement of the youth in Indian democracy as it presents a dexterous generational evaluation of political identity. Academic and author, Badri Narayan's Republic of Hindutva: How the Sangh Is Reshaping Indian Democracy, examines the evolving structures and system of beliefs that comprise the RSS. In conversation with author and academic Mukulika Banerjee, they discuss the coming-of-age of an entire nation focusing on its foundations and the future.
Saket Suman is a writer, journalist and literary chronicler. He is the author of The Psychology of a Patriot. As a journalist, he has worked at The Statesman, Indo Asian News Service (IANS) and the Times Group, besides being published extensively on popular culture, politics and human rights in reputed newspapers, magazines and news portals.
Makarand R Paranjape has been a Professor of English at JNU, New Delhi. He served as Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla and is the author and editor of over fifty books, one hundred and eighty academic papers, and thousands of articles. His latest books include JNU: Nationalism and India’s Uncivil War, Identity’s Last Secret, Swami Vivekananda: Hinduism and India’s Road to Modernity, and The Death and Afterlife of Mahatma Gandhi. Paranjape is currently a columnist in Open Magazine, Gulf News, The New Indian Express, and Firstpost.
Gurmehar Kaur is a social activist who published her first book, Small Acts of Freedom, at JLF in 2018. In 2017, Kaur was listed by TIME magazine as a 'Next Generation Leader', a global listing of ten young men and women making a difference in the world. Her second book, The Young and the Restless: Youth and Politics in India, was shortlisted for the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar in 2021. She co-founded Citizens for Public Leadership (CPL), an independent nonpartisan movement focused on advocating for progressive public policy in India.
Badri Narayan, social historian and cultural anthropologist, is the Director of G B Pant Social Science Institute, Allahabad. Besides having written a number of articles both in English and Hind, he has recently authored Republic of Hindutva and his other critically acclaimed books include, Fractured Tales: Invisibles in Indian Democracy, The Making of the Dalit Public in North India: Uttar Pradesh 1950-present and Women Heroes and Dalit Assertion in North India, among others.
