NOTE YOUR STARTING CHAIN MUST BE EVENLY DIVIDED BY 18 AND 12 FOR ALL 4 PATTERNS IN THE CAL TO WORK OUT. THE 4TH PATTERN IS A MULTIPLE OF 18. You will skip the first chain and begin working in the second chain from the hook, ending up with an odd number of stitches. EXAMPLE for SCARF: I chained 40 and had 39 stitches at the end of my first Foundation Row, 36 STITCHES IS THE MULTIPLE WHICH CAN BE DIVIDED BY 12 AND 18.

STARTING CHAINS FOR YOUR PROJECT:
To begin your project you will chain in multiples of 18 plus 4 at the end.
Suggested starting chains for various projects for the CAL - counts include +4 at end, yarn amounts included under this section:
Shawl: 76 total starting chains [approximately 22 inches wide in size 3 DK yarn]
Throw blanket : 148 chains, yarn size will affect total width [approximately 44 inches in size 3 DK)
Scarf: 40 total starting chains
THE YARN: I'm using size 3 yarn, any brand will work as well as any size.
Color A: Stylecraft Special DK in Apple
Color B: Stylecraft Special DK in Spearmint
Colors in Shawl photos are Stylecraft Special DK in Grey and Hayfield Bonus Dk Extra Value in Cream.
HOW MUCH YARN:
SHAWL: on my shawl version I used 3 balls of Grey [966 yards] and 4 balls of Cream [1124 yards]
BLANKET: approximately 2000 yards of color A and 2550 yards of Color B
SCARF: approximately 450 yards of Color A and 550 yards of color B
Your will have some yarn left over.
HOOK SIZE: I am using a 4.5mm hook in this tutorial. I recommend using the below hook sizes depending on yarn used:
3 DK yarn : 3.5mm to 4.5mm
Size 4 Medium/worsted weight: 4.5mm to 5.5mm.
Mixing 3 & 4 weight: 3.5mm to 4.5mm
Note on mixing yarn sizes 3 (DK) & Size 4 (Medium Worsted weight): THE TRICK TO MIXING YARN SIZES IS JUST KEEPING YOUR TENSION EVEN AND USING THE SMALLEST SIZE HOOK RECOMMENDED FOR THE SMALLER YARN! You can use any yarn size you like and can use yarn that is all the same size, you do not have to mix yarn sizes.
Stitches used in this project: Back Loop Single Crochet and Front Loop Double Crochet (drop down double crochet as I like to call it).
