Great shoot and video! Beautiful model and gown, also. Intriguing challenge to chose one. However, since that would be the case for a magazine piece, that’s the reality of it. I really like the first of the four (daylight exiting the taxi). But because it’s an evening gown, the the ones on the right really stand out in context. As the lighting and gel give a more night appearance (even though, shot in shaded daylight, awesome work). So, I like the lit ones more, and of those, the full body shot (third from left).

I read this more about using the light that works for the photo you're making. I find it clear how the natural light gives you a natural light feel and doesn't require gear and how you can go full drama and control with the strobes. And I felt that the thesis was there is no camp that is 100% right for 100% of the shoots. But if you want something else from the shoot, I get that too.

Fantastic side by side of natural available light and studio light gear! Both images are perfect on their own, I feel that some of us photographers may be intimidated by lighting gear but ultimately it will be beneficial for our own good because in the end aside from letting natural light inspire us mastering artificial light give us more control and that will lead to more posibilities. By the way at one point in your video when shooting the yellow gown against the blue wall I loved how all of it looked, from the model on the wall, the lighting gear and the city background it could have made an interesting shot too. Thanks Ms. Lindsay Adler for all you share and thanks ADORAMA for having great profesionals on your channel teach us more about all the great gear you guys offer!

The drama that the strobe gives and the tones from the dress with the reflective light contracting against the under exposed ambient light. That why I like this shot the most. However, it depends, as you say, what the purpose of the shot is. The natural light shot is cool too, especially with the passing cab in the background.

For sure, each of these pics are appealing , a must be able to create similar if ever having the idea to be taken serious about being a pro photog. Thank you for this shooting session, see /hear you.

What's the point of doing a comparison using two different setups? Not only were the scenes very different, the briefs were as well with the flash concept not being very successful, AFAIC. Oranges and Apples?! Also, the blunt advertising for Canon mirrorless technology was really off putting. Great that you saw everything in the viewfinder with "exposure simulation". Did you see the effect of the flash as well? I guess such a small detail isn't worth mentioning.

The yellow cab and yellow dress is interesting. Most Togs would've gone with a contrasting palette of colors. The Blue gel on the Blue wall is unnecessary IMHO. If you really wanted to use a color gel, then a red Back light would be better. Flagged off the subject so that the yellow is intact, the blue wall is clearly visible, and the red back light can act as a vibrant contrast. Much appreciate the tutorial video. Keep up the good work. Cheers

nice tuto. do you shoot in manual or aperture priority in both cases ? what is the shutter speed ? This is the question i ask myself every day, natural light (how to have eyes lighten enough without burning background, refelector or not ?) or OCf with a small diffuser like flashender3, rapidbox 66cm,... I like both types, really amazing images. however in this tuto, instead of a totally new setup with two strobes and one gel, I would have preferred same picture near the taxi with one OCF and compare eyes exposure,... and what is possible in post production to lighten face,...

The two different looks are a consequence of her choice to go with two very different concepts. One can make strobe-supported shots look very natural as well. I don't think I've ever seen a more pointless "comparison".
@kevincassar8022
4 жыл бұрын
It's not the ideal comparison IMO. It's a completely different look. Shooting the same shot with natural light and strobe would have been easier to choose and notice the differences. I feel that many photographers, these days, rely on the exceptional quality/dynamic range of their cameras and rather than light up their subject and getting the best possible quality and light, they tend to shoot with available light and bring back shadows in post.
@coolcat23
4 жыл бұрын
"Not ideal" comparison is putting it very mildly. It was an absolutely useless comparison. I agree that some natural light shooters heavily rely on the dynamic range of their cameras. Some of them use available light really well and if the final result looks great, who cares what had to happen in post? Both types of light can be used to great effect; the main issue with available light is that it heavily limits your background choice, time of shooting, likelihood of the weather playing along, etc. Artificial light should be about affording the photographer more control, rather than creating garish looks.
@lindsayadlerphoto
4 жыл бұрын
@@coolcat23 @kevincassar hey guys. so the idea was that I wouldn't have shot the blue with natural light (because it wouldn't have had the pop and contrast) and I didn't think the yellow cab needed a strobe. So natural vs. strobe actually impacted my choice of location-- which is part of the story. Either way, if you watch my KZitem channel coming up I have more of the 'exact location and shot comparison' for you coming up. Just want you are asking for!
@coolcat23

@@lindsayadlerphoto It's all good. I don't anyone is debating your lighting choices; they work very well for the location and what you were after. It's just that you cannot call this a "comparison" in any meaningful way, that's all.

🤨 I really dislike the first photo as there is just too much amber applied in post. While this dress looks best, the amber cast is pulling my eye away from the dress. It looks all washed out as if you used a cheap child's toy camera. The same can be said for the strobe light as there is just too much blue which has made the dress have a green cast. In the third image, the model looks like she's a blue alien from outer space. I wish I had the RAW images to import into Capture One and show how amazing these images can really be. The shots are great. Color grading is poor. Sorry but it's how I see it. While I like natural light in photos, I don't like that I can't control it. I see many photographers use NL because it's just easy. No need to carry around and place strobes. I prefer using strobes as I can kill the NL and use my strobes to put the light where I need it. If the sun is corporative then, I let it in the shot just a bit to fill mostly the background. In a perfect world, we would have drones equipped with strobes to make lighting more of a joy than a chore. 😋
