Oh Navajo Grandma, your silver and turquoise are exquisite and beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing and of course for being my Navajo grandma. I am 62 and all of my elders have passed on. Somedays I wake up and realize how alone I am. Your videos are a blessing in my day, thank you. Your family is a joy to watch, I like the sign boards so I can follow along and I may eventually be able to say a few words in Navajo. I can tell people that my “grandma” taught them to me. Thank you so much...

I know the smell you're talking about it's like the smell that your hands make when you touch the hangers at a thrift store or at a department store which I don't go to. My mother taught me early in life to shop at thrift stores and be proud. So even when I made good money I still always have bought used clothing because we produce so much waste and the used clothing is dumped where indigenous people live in other countries and the dye and the poisons from the artificial clothing run down and poison the water of the peoples of those areas. My mother taught me things long before they were known in the news. She would get visions of things and say that it was just a hunch. We would all look at each other like a hunch you knew that 10 minutes before it happened! Both my mother and I and she has passed now and I have not got to grieve it yet, have a chemical reaction to the metal in coat hangers and it makes a smell the nickel jewelry smells the same to me. That was a very long way of me trying to tell you that it reminds me of coat hangers. I'm loving this because it's all so beautiful too bad that is not all silver in some ways but some people wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. Some people wouldn't be able to afford to make jewelry. I'm for anything that helps people make a living that is good. But being honest I would prefer silver. Being honest I would never refuse the nickel bracelet as a gift from anyone. Hehe

What an interesting explanation with such moving memories and heartstrings attached. Write this down like you did. This was a beautiful perfect lovely explanation and grandma loved it. I was absorbed in what you wrote because your explanation of that smell is so perfect, its because I too went through that with my father. We went to thrift stores and daddy always went to this back street where these black folks had a shop and boy there were smells there that one will not forget. Smell like cooking, hangers exactly like you said, moth balls, dust in the air, and on and on, but it was a place daddy said, we need to go there to buy to help these folks. So we did. I got a purse there that is now worth millions, it looked plastic with brown pearl like handles and still perfect. Those were the days. Wow, I love your writing and expressive ability. You need to write a book of your life and your mother's life. You know, sometimes, I believe when we don't grieve, we know they are close by and watch over us and that gives more comfort to our spirit than anything. Its okay not to grieve because we know they are not gone, but still with us in spirit. Joy and understanding like that brings calm. Loved your comment. Navajo Grandma

Wonderful! Thank you for the time you took to share with your children purchasing some turquoise. You needn't polish your silver, just wearing it or rubbing the silver with your fingers and your body acid will shine the silver properly. Wearing it shines it as well of course if you want a quick shine, I take some colgate toothpaste, rub it together in my hands then get my silver jewelry rub it everywhere really well, then wash it off with warm water. Walla it is shiny as can be. Mostly, as you wear it it will keep it shiny. I had to rewatch the video and yes the Holy People do want to find you wearing your jewelry. At least being Dine' that was the stories told to us. Thank you for watching and hope you subscribed. Welcome again and again and remember Navajo Grandma does appreciate your watching her videos. I love this. I believe a very old brooch that I have is Navajo Old Pawn. These pieces are made of coin silver melted down and are the lowest grade of silver. .800. But they can be shined up nicely. The stones were not mined and were picked up off of the ground. Some say the quality is not as nice as mined, but I have to disagree. I have seen beautiful stones. Many were unstable, easily broken when worn in a setting. Sometimes they would stabilize the stone by adding ground turquoise and something like a resin. Not sure what it was. I just learned this a few months ago and I love these. I like the newer ones too. I could tell the difference between the nickel and the silver. The sheen is totally different. I wish I could do the smell test. That is pure talent and skill!!! I want to see a necklace that uses sinew. I don't think I have. I am glad that Native Artists are getting the recognition and prices that they deserve. I was going to sell my necklace (small and simple) that I got years and years ago. Not now. Will wear it to bed! Silver is my favorite. I like it better than gold.

Thank you Debbie. So you like jewelry? This came out a little silly but true to character. My mother and grandparents use to adorn themselves just beautifully with their old style antique NAVAJO jewelry you can’t buy anymore. We humbly buried them with these gorgeous jewelry then reports came about the Mormon Church men who had buried them were seen using a digger machine late into the night after burials. Thereafter folks seeing jewelry they had buried their dead with in the jewelry casings. My father being a Navajo Policeman looked into this, found it was true, in fact my grandmothers necklace was found in their store. After exhuming the jewelry was all gone. The judge didn’t even blink an eye and said somehow the jewelry were missing and an INDIAN blaming an honest god fearing Mormon was not going to be prosecuted in his court. Boom. Done. We were never able to get my Bizhi’s necklace. A normal treatment of NAVAJOS back in the day. I told my daughters should I ever expire, take every FETCHIN jewelry off of me and share it amongst themselves. Meanwhile I am not going anywhere. Haha. FYI Navajo Grandma

So pretty! I wish I knew more about my Indian great grandmother. I’m a white lady, but my grandmother’s mother, was an Indian from Oklahoma. All I know is that her married name was Matilda Campbell, and she married a white man, and they lived in a dirt floor cabin in Oklahoma. My grandma always said that her mom was Cherokee, but I don’t know if that’s accurate. There were a few tribes in that area. I’ll never know. It’s weird being a pale, freckle faced Caucasian “mutt” with a ever so slim thread linking me to my Native American great grandmother I know almost nothing about. But my grandmother taught me how to look for real sterling silver, and turquoise, and makers marks. She believed that “real” jewelry was extremely valuable. Far more valuable than their dollar value, because real artists made them.

Okay I have a delicate question. I have what I’ve been told is a 300 year old Native American skull that was given to me by an uncle. He got it from a friend who was an archeologist from what I’ve been told was out west from a farm back in the 70s. It’s been very special to me, I kept it in my bedroom when I was a kid to watch over me. I’m thinking it’s time to return it for a traditional burial. Can anyone give me some direction on who to give it to so I know that is what’s going to happen? I’m in North Carolina

Sorry Amanda, I do not like Facebook. I have friends who say something and "it becomes against community standards," and they get taken off because it doesn't agree with the Woke standards or the Antifa or BLM or Marxist way of thinking. It is so ugly and awful and the control with vile evil. There is nothing regarding Constitutional Rights there, but only for those who are Marxist and Woke, they can say anything horrific and allowed. But others are marked. Maybe when Zuckerberg dies maybe. So far it is filthy and I am sorry I am being very opinionated here. But it is truth to me that FB is not a good place for me. Gma

Yes Garai White, as your read about history and know history, you come to see that it was embedded into the walls, floors, bed posts, sarcophagus. Yup the Jews adorned and respected this stone as well. Many of the Eastern tribes were enamored by this stone and it had power and goodness but also people were put to death if they allowed these stones to change. Like Grandma said, your body has acids that do cause changes in stones and in metals. Apparently back then they never knew this and put it down as marked for death or dismemberment or becoming witched. So many fallacies that existed. Glad I live now but even now there are lies that are told too. So as long as you wear your turquoise it is lovely to wear. Good power, protection, royal stone and just plain lovely. Hi Grandma, what's the best way to take care of turquoise jewelry? Please let us know. Thank you!
@NavajoGrandma
3 жыл бұрын
This is what I was told. Turquoise needs water, and your natural body oils and acids. Wear it normal, wash it with warm water, pat it dry, shine the silver. I have done this for 50 years and my jewelry is still beautiful. One turned color on me, just got a weird darker color, never bought that kind of stone again. Hope this helped. Navajo Grandma

Do you think silver should be polished? Or allowed to darken….which I am not fond of….
@NavajoGrandma
3 жыл бұрын
It is all up to the owner. They say that allowing the silver to darken on jewelry makes it more valuable because of the patina. My rule of thumb, if I am going to be wearing the silver, then I polish it or my body oils polish it as I wear it, it will be polished anyway the more I wear the item. The second rule of thumb if you want to sell a jewelry piece you can spout it is old and has a lot of patina on it to prove it is old, thus you can sell it for more money. That is the reason for leaving the patina on and in some cases it is good too. Hope that helped. Navajo Grandma

How can you tell if it’s real turquoise or fake? Love you showed us about sliver & nickel
@NavajoGrandma
3 жыл бұрын
Turquoise is naturally a soft stone, but howlite (the turquoise imitation, is a white stone very easy to dye), is even softer. This means that if you scratch your stone and it scratches easily, you most likely have a piece of howlite. But if it's very difficult to scratch your stone, you've got genuine turquoise! This is why folks use their teeth to bite or scratch the stone with their teeth. Also if you take nail polish remover and pure acetone, swab the stone if it is howlite, the color will rub off. I should have explained this during my video but sometimes there is much to explain it gets lost in the presentation. You should know this. Navajo Grandma

Grandma! I noticed that our jewelry contains that it looks like to be coral? 🪸 what is the significance of this in our culture? And does it have a spiritual significance? Thank you for the wisdom. 🤎
@NavajoGrandma
4 ай бұрын
Early on in the 19th Century, the Navajo, our people, named coral one of the eighteen sacred objects, which is why it is common in Native American Jewelry and ornaments. The Navajo see as a water spirit, or that it holds that essence, since it comes from the ocean. With that being said, wearing it during ceremonies or in everyday use widens the chance of your prayers being heard. Coral is highly-prized as a substance believed to be endowed with mysterious sacred properties. It is a symbol of modesty, wisdom, happiness and immortality. It is commonly known to remedy spasms of intestines, sleeplessness, and bladder stones. As Navajos we all have been taught certain truths and mythology and they are different in all sections of the Navajo Nation. So to one place it is defined different than in another place. Be careful that you don't believe everyone has this same definition. Some refuse to wear coral. Just an fyi. Navajo Grandma

And so Turkey is being maybe 60% turkic! But 100% turkish.. Just so you know, you can google 'samarkand' to see photos of turquoise tiles.. meaning we turks are related to that color and material as you are.. then when it comes to culture, yakuts tribe in siberia that are a turkic tribe, might remember you of some of your culture.. as well as nenets of russia..
