Yes, the plow nose does go below the railhead. That's why they lift it at highway crossings and at track switches ("points" to the Brits). Great video !!

The Rotary Snowplow has been around since the Steam age, when steam locomotives were used to power the spinning fan blades of the snowplow to clear snowdrifts that were taller than the trains themselves.

Im a big believer in useing the Jordan Spreader instead of a regular snow plow.I notice the wings weren't out,but if you get going 25 to 30mph,your going push alot of snow like this one did.

Nice video! Sure would be fun to see then smash through those big drifts on the crossings at high speed, but that would be disastrous if they derailed, which happens a lot in winter with ice in the crossings.

@The1jzSoarer The reason for the large plow, is so it can better handle deep snow, and snow drifts. And while the small plows on the normal trains are very nice, they are limited to how much they can handle.

The spreader does not need the wings unless your in deep drift conditions. Just the energy of the snow moving out of the way will carry it a long ways. But with deep snow conditions or wet snow conditions the snow will not carry in movement. Then they need the wings to keep the area clear on the sides of tracks.

That looks like a better built Spreader than what we use. We do find that useing the wings and the flanger together, does create air problems. Your right, only use the wings when you only need to.

@stihlthebest It's being pushed by the locomotives. The spreader does have a motor running, but it's for the hydrolics of the spreader.

The snow plows on the engines are fixed and stay well above the rail head. The spreader gets down in between because the snow between the rails if left can turn to ice and cause tons of issues.....

They try to keep the gauge free of snow so that doesn't turn to ice as you mentioned. I can't speak for this situation, but often RR maintenance crews are out ahead of the plow to check crossings for the very things/fears you have mentioned.

@kezmj Well it's the same way in Texas and southern states where it rarely snows as oppose to Northern states in US. It's not snow, but in Los Angelos, traffic comes to a halt or "slows" down when it rains. LA citizens are not used to rain as it accumulates very little throughout the year. Anyone from LA might agree, lol
