Under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, John Starks etched his name into NBA lore. Yet, his journey to those celebrated moments was anything but ordinary. Born on August 10, 1965, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Starks' path was fraught with challenges that tested his resolve and spirit. From a tumultuous college experience to becoming an NBA All-Star, Starks' life story is one of grit, tenacity, and unwavering determination.
In Tulsa, Starks attended Tulsa Central High School, where he played just one year on the basketball team. Despite his limited high school basketball experience, his passion for the game was undeniable. After graduating, he enrolled at Rogers State College in 1984. However, his time there was fraught with challenges. Starks was relegated to the "taxi squad," a group of backup players who watched games from the stands. His college career faced a major setback when he was expelled for stealing another student's stereo equipment-a retaliation for a dorm room break-in that he and his roommates were unfairly held financially responsible for.
