i think it's just harder to build a team around him, supremely talented player and probably the single best offensive engine but it's a reason somebody like kuzma vetoed a trade to dallas, kp left, brunson left and overall not many stars have shown overwhelming interest in playing with him/would fit well with him. it takes a lot to not be as involved and still cover for the holes in luka's game while hitting shots out of rhythm (although mostly open bc he's such a great playmaker). this all being said as a celtics fan i wouldn't even consider trading tatum for luka bc i prefer my best player to be able to do EVERYTHING and on both ends; he's simply an easier player to build around and more well rounded even though luka is clearly a better stand alone offensive talent in a vacuum

Luka, along with the team of which he is a member, have collectively taken the challenges and met them with confidence and stamina. Up to this point, the recipe for success, was to injure Luka IMO. It’s the only way opponents can contain him more. From Westbrook’s knockdowns, shoulders to the ribs, and trying to jerk his arm out of socket, to Zubac and his elbows and shoulders, to Dort just throwing him in the ground and getting a jump ball out it…inflicting pain was the goal. Now, the Mavs are playing a team that isn’t doing that so much. The result so far? Getting choked out at home, leading 93 minutes out of 96…and losing two games

@@Tophergr8 At this point we know what's going to happen from Luka, Kyrie, MN stars, and their role players. The only question left is will PJ and DJJ FINALLY start hitting their shots again. If they don't, then it will be another slog with Dallas fighting to stay in the game until the end and if they can hit their shots again, they should win. If PJ and DJJ hit their shots and give us 30pts or so, it's a blowout (or at least a 10point win). Considering his health, Luka can't really be himself and give you a 45 pt game and our centers are maxed out at 30/15. So with Kyrie in the 20-30pt range that leaves the role players and bench players to score enough to win. No Earthly clue if they will or not.

MAILBAG (idea): Hi Jason, love your analysis and insights on the NBA! I have an idea for a series titled “NBA Playoff Unsung Heroes.” This series could highlight players who played crucial roles in their team’s championship runs, but often fly under the radar. For example, JJ Barea’s impact with the Mavericks in 2011 is a great story of how an unsung hero can push a team to the top. Other players that come to mind are: • Robert Horry (multiple clutch performances across his career) • Andre Iguodala (2015 Finals MVP for the Warriors) • Derek Fisher (key shots for the Lakers) • Tony Allen (defensive powerhouse for the Celtics) It would be amazing to see you break down their contributions and how they helped their teams reach the pinnacle of success. I thought Lukas excellence in the playoffs and in season weirdly low MVP finishes year after year were a contrast with how I view him. Minnesota has a great team but when you are the best on the court by a mile it reverberates. I think as far as offensive firepower combined with the high level shotmaking in the paint and outside Luka has a clear advantage over jokic . Lukas passing is elite his lobs he throws and the passing angles he can take are next level. The only thing jokic has is more height and he had a much better supporting cast around him so that he was able to have the team success necessary to win the narrative war that is the MVP race.

The Mavs would’ve had big problems against DEN without Kleber. It’s an interesting hypothetical if the Mavs were healthy. @@AdamHammond- fair to a point but it goes beyond just the UTA series. They’ve gone at it during international competition too. But Rudy IS a massive reason their defense is so good-when you’ve got the guy most infamous for shredding him in PnR action it creates a domino effect on their defensive approach. The fundamental problem is both teams constructed rosters specifically for DEN, but only one of them had to actually play DEN. So now MIN has size, but they aren’t physical at all. You’ve got three 7-footers: one is a non-threat offensively and exploitable by Luka, then the other two think they’re guards (although I would give anything to put Naz with this Mavs roster). DAL added several straight up DOGS which they’ve never had with Luka. I wish Kleber was available but in an ironic twist not having him has simplified everything for Kidd. The Mavs literally have zero lineup flexibility right now. It’s 48 minutes of Gaff/Lively, the end. OKC’s inability to make DAL pay killed them because they desperately needed to flip that clear Mavs advantage against them. MIN has yet to exploit it, not by going “small” because like you said, they cannot and will not beat Luka/Kyrie playing first to 110 basketball, but through their inability to get PJ in particular or either big in foul trouble. Lucky for them the NBA called in Tony Brothers so they’ll probably have a good chance at that tonight. They’ve already got a 1-0 lead cuz Luka 100% getting T’d up tonight haha

That is what you are wrong about Dallas and Nuggets. When Nuggets loss to Mavs in February 11 with Kyrie’s dagger, it was only the 16th game of PJ and DG for Dallas. After that game, they have gotten better and better. If Dallas and Nuggets are playing the Conf. Finals, I’d put my bet on Dalllas. 😉

The difference between Jokic and Luka is that Joker uses his intelligence to control the game through a blend of everything. Luka can score at (or above) a Jordan level, then do the same thing with passing and rebounding (a little weaker at rebounding, but Joker gets a few bunnies every game by tapping up missed shots once or twice). They're very similar in their contributions to their team but Luka actually has the ability to be a little better defensively, a little better passer, and much better scorer. I'd give him the edge, but it's no shade to say Joker is still the best. But other than Embiid coming back and finally being healthy a full season, there's no one at their level.

Very good video but when i heard him talk about championship of last 5 years i lost it. Toronto played in the final a GS totally compromised, but most important the 2020 Lakers title is one of the easier run in playoff history. The best run was clearly GS in 2022 but if Dallas can pull it off then it would be the most impressive championship run since the 2011 Mavs in terms of overall strenght of competition and do it while never having home court advantage.

I can give you the Clippers but Minnesota and Okc were legit teams doesn't matter the excuses you make, still 50+ win teams on a strong conference and then a 60+ win team in the finals who has been the favorite since the start of the season, all without having home court advantage. GS in 2017 and 2018 was far superior to everyone and got only one difficult series in two years, Cavs in 2016 had it easy in the east, far superior team in the Conference like Boston this season. GS if they could won in 2016 that would have been the best but unfortunately they didn't. Miami were far superior in their conference and heavy favorite since the start of the year. Probably the Spurs in 2014 had a smiliar impressive run i can give you that. But anyway if we talk about last 5 years would have been by far the best, if they pull it off obviously which is gonna be hard to do.

Reasons why Jokic is better than Luka 1) Jokic is a better scorer against the best defenses in the playoffs 2) A better shooter most of the time (though he shot horribly from 3 this postseason) 3) A better rebounder 4) Better playmaker (better at involving teammates, being unpredictable, allowing others to get in rhythm) 5) Less turnover prone 6) Better post player (Luka is the best perimeter post player but not the best overall) 7)Better leader (how he behaves with refs, his ability to always be in shape and sacrifice stats for team involvement) 8) Better floor raiser/ carrying bad teams (Luka missed the playoffs in his prime) 9) better off ball player 10) easier to play with/ less fit issues Luka is a better ball handler and volume scorer for sure. I think that people forget that jokic has had worse help in his prime (2021-2024) than Luka did. Luka had Porzingis, Brunson, Kyrie and always had great defenders around him. Jokic had Murray who has been injured 3 of the last four season and who is a tier below kyrie. Also he didn't always have defenders around him. Jones, Lively and Gafford are better defenders than Kcp and Gordon.

Look at him now, 5 months after he got some help, he will obsolutlely win the championship. Mavs are going to stump Seltiks. And stop pumpin Edwards please. He is a good player, but he doasnt have the killer instinct in clutch situations, and u can’t learn that, u have to be born like that. Edwards is still years away and you can tell from his numbers. He played a full season and finished 25/5/5. Those are good numbers, but not a Superstar's numbers. People give Tatum so much shit but he's at 27/8/5 on a team that gets a lot of blowouts so they don't need him to score every night (and he finishes early more often than most stars). He is head and shoulders better than Edwards at this point, but the narrative wants Edwards (with his cool nickname 🙄 ) to be That Guy. He needs to get above the Brunson level, then above the Tatum/Shai level, then get to the Giannis/Joker/Luka/Embiid level. So give him 2 or 3 years of hard work and if things break his way he could get there. But personally I'm done with the casuals just going along with what they're told by the NBA and the media about Edwards being the "Face of the NBA". Right now he's 3rd tier.

When he plays bad, as he has more recently, its suddenly “hes 22 he still needs time to grow”. There is no need to crown him better than players like Tatum who have accomplished more and continue to play at a high level.
