Michael Burton Brown is an American basketball coach currently serving as the head coach for the Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Brown has previously held head coaching positions with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, and was most recently an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. He also coaches the Nigerian national team. Brown started coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005, leading them to the 2007 NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the San Antonio Spurs. In 2009, he was named NBA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cavaliers to a franchise-record and league-best 66 wins. The following year, the Cavaliers achieved a league-best 61 wins. However, after a loss to the Boston Celtics in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals, Brown was dismissed. He then succeeded Phil Jackson as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011 but was fired five games into the 2012-13 season. Brown returned to the Cavaliers in 2013 but was let go after one season. In 2016, he joined the Golden State Warriors as an associate head coach, contributing to their victories in the 2017, 2018, and 2022 NBA Finals. In 2022, Brown left the Warriors to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings. In his debut season, he led the Kings to their first playoff appearance in 17 years, ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history. For his outstanding performance, Brown was the first-ever unanimous NBA Coach of the Year and was also named the NBCA Coach of the Year in 2023.
