Another good game and video. The beginning of the golden era of basketball. These great games are why I haven’t watched any NBA games since the 2014 Spurs run.

There is such a big difference between the breakneck paced 80s before the Detroit BadBoys and the slug/grindfest that was the 90s/00s. Each have their appeal but I'd say the 80s game looked very similar to the modern game (pace and early shotclock shots). The big difference ofcourse is illegal defence that allowed more post ups. This made the 80s and 90s a more iso heavy game, while the 00s saw the evolution of team defence (no more illegal defence) and the struggles of the offence to catch up (until the Suns cracked the code). I can't believe you don't enjoy the modern Denver Nuggets, they shoot a low number of threes, move well without the ball, have a great low post presence and no egos. They remind me very much of the 2014 Spurs....

The Lakers lack of an offensive threat at power forward killed them this series as they had no one to make Olajuwon work on defense, allowing him to play free safety.

One thing about the 1986 Rockets that gets forgotten about: they were 36-5 at home. Second best record at home in the league (Behind Boston's legendary 40-1) and the best home record in Houston history Yes, a better home record than even the 1993-94 champions or the 65 win 2017-18 version

If Ralph Sampson stays healthy, him and Hakeem would have definitely continued to be a contender throughout the 80's, especially with Kareem entering his 40's. That's why I wouldn't have been surprised to find out that the Lakers were privately relieved when Seattle eliminated the Rockets the following season (although the 87 Lakers were obviously better than the 86 Lakers and the 87 Rockets weren't quite as good as the 86 Rockets. The Lakers still had no real answer for the twin towers) On the Lakers end, this was effectively the final season that the Lakers half-court offense revolved around Kareem. After this season, Riley finally gave the keys to the entire offense to Magic. What resulted was 3 league MVP's, 3 straight finals appearances and 2 more NBA titles with Magic becoming the unquestioned #1 guy.

@@Riles3152 Not to mention like 1/4 of the roster was high as a kite lol. What makes this series win more impressive is that they had to overcome the loss of starting PG John Lucas after he relapsed and was kicked off the team who was averaging 15/5 that season.

The Lakers lost the opening game of the 86/87 season to Houston at The Summit then, proceeded to spank the Rockets the next 4x they played that year. Key factors for that Lakers team- 1)Michael Thompson didn't join vis-a-vis trade until February, 2)the Magic-centric offense you alluded to hadn't established itself and developed, 3)the insertion of AC Green in the starting line-up increasing the teams speed and spacing with his generally consistent midrange shooting. All these took some time to coalesce and develop! Once they did, nobody was beating that '87 Lakers team, including a "healthy" Rockets team. Remember, even though Houston won the '86 series in 5, every game was close. Had Sampson's last second shot not fallen and had LA sent it back to Houston for Gm.#6- the Lakers were more than capable of bringing it back to LA for #7. Regardless, that Lakers team, though solid, didn't even hv the bench, cohesiveness, or versatility the '87 team did and, the Rockets outplayed them and deserved it. The Lakers acquired Thompson at the deadline in Feb. that year and, at one point, they went 30-3 until they lost the last 2 games of the season after clinching homecourt throughout. Nothing is ever a given, as the 73-win '16 Warriors and the 67-win '07 Mavs hv shown however, that '87 team was a juggernaut that, when playing their best, could absolutely embarrass teams. If anything, their weaknesses was overconfidence and complacency!
